Daughter had a cough for 3.5 weeks - in those 3.5 weeks she received antibiotics and she started vomiting - to a point where after going to A&E 3 times we were asked to stop the antibiotics. This week her cough is almost gone but she's still vomiting once at night and once early hours of the morning. In the afternoon she's perfectly fine. Also her inflammation, white blood cells and chest xray came back all fine now.GP said to wait it out - but my worry with that is she is also missing certain days at school. If its asthma would she only be vomiting at night/early morning? Im thinking she needs a scan/ gastro to see what's going on, my husband says to leave it and it will sort itself out. AIBU to not wanting to wait and see what happens?

Coughing at night can indicate asthma. Asthma and reflux also often go together - how old is she, would she be old enough to try some gaviscon before bed?

Wondering if she's just a puker - I'm asthmatic and have had many awful coughs over the years but the only time I threw up was when I was pregnant. I assumed it was just the pregnancy making me more prone to vomiting in general iykwim.

Thank you. Trying to see if we can test for asthma

If the antibiotics have hurt her stomach, it might be worth trying some probiotic yogurt daily and see if that makes any difference.

Thanks. I had heard dairy makes it worse, hence why I left it. But will try it as I have had many people say probiotic helps

Hi OP, my DC is 4 years and had a terrible virus cough type thing that made her vomit a couple of times. The GP thought it was whooping cough and gave antibiotics, kept her home for a week from nursery with as much rest as possible and back to normal now. It was a very specific antibiotic prescribed and we had trouble getting it from a chemist because there is a shortage of it. Not sure if it's the same thing but DD didn't have the whooping with it just vomiting and couldn't catch her breath from coughing when outside walking/running around.

Mamabear04 · 25/04/2024 16:38

Ps it actually wasn't whooping cough but the antibiotics seemed to do the trick! Sorry that's not much help. I just called the GP to confirm if the test was negative and it was!

The pp who suggested asthma is my experience. When my DD was about 7 she had a cough every night for a while, I thought I cant take her to GP as shes not coughing now (daytime). Eventually I took her and the GP made me feel like the mother from hell:- how long has this child been like this! I wasn't even allowed to take her with me to the chemist to get her prescription, I had to leave her in the surgery. In between patients the GP was coming to check on her. Eventually we were allowed home with instructions what to do if she started coughing at night again. It really didnt seem that bad a cough to be honest and I didn't know nighttime coughing was a symptom of asthma.
