This should be mainstream news.

Over 19,000 children abducted bt Russia claim Ukraine. Story on Al Jazerra this morning.

Russia accused of taking over 19,000 children by Ukraine.

Russia say they move them from conflict areas to keep safe. Some are gradually being returned.

Aibu to think this should be mainstream news. Over 19,000 children abducted. I can't believe that this doesn't get covered. It's all strictly come dancing chit chat, eurovison chit chat and rubbish about Trump.

It's a tragedy, but it has been covered by multiple major news resources over the last year. It was also featured on Panorama.

I'd adjust your viewing if all you're seeing is "strictly come dancing chit chat, eurovison chit chat"

The "rubbish about Trump" Is entirely newsworthy. The former (and God help us, maybe future) US president is currently on trial.

Sugarcoatedalmonds · 25/04/2024 09:12

As others have said, it is covered by mainstream news. Maybe you are looking at the wrong news sources if its all chit chat about telly.

Mrsjayy · 25/04/2024 09:14

I just wanted to add another voice of this is well known and is regularly on mainstream news, it's absolutely horrific those poor children.

VickyEadieofThigh · 25/04/2024 09:14

I never see Strictly, etc chat because I go to real news sources, where - as other PP have stated - this has been covered.

US2gether · 25/04/2024 09:16

I watch the BBC each day rather than read their website and not seen recent stories. Guess I'm not paying attention.

I don't read the Guardian.

I watch Al Jazerra more since 'appears' to me to cover more.

The last few days it's been lots of eurovison chat.

OK then since covered as responses say why no action to get over 19,000 abducted children returned? Doesn't appear to be of major concern. That's more children than killed in Gaza.

What are you looking for from your thread? Posters have said they have seen this on mainstream news so you go on to talk about eurovision then Gaza?

PerkingFaintly · 25/04/2024 09:24

The documentary "Ukraine's Stolen Children" is worth watching.

https://www.itv.com/watch/ukraines-stolen-children/10a5054a0001B

It's quite distressing, and details the Russians obstructing families trying to recover the children.

Then on the other side, the Russians tell the children they've been abandoned, that their families don't want them, that they'll be punished by Ukraine if they return, that they'll be given their own flats and income when they turn 18 if they stay in Russia... It's the full brainwashing package.

How? They are in Russia?

Gaza is part of Israel - for all its manifold faults, part of western democracy. They do in fact allow aid in.
You think Russia is going to fling open the doors to a bunch of western rescuers? You're looking pretty ignorant of global politics here OP.

Sugarcoatedalmonds · 25/04/2024 09:25

It isn't a race to the bottom. I don't understand what you (or anyone) gains by comparing 2 tragedies involving innocent children.

Thank you. I will watch this. I genuinely didn't realise the number of children. Hence, why I couldn't understand why it was being discussed daily on BBC news.

It is/has been for some time.

You don’t read the Guardian.

There’s your answer.

US2gether · 25/04/2024 09:39

@Mrsjayy

I asked a question, I got answers.

The most useful response directed me to a programme about this which I'll watch.

KreedKafer · 25/04/2024 09:43

There's been absolutely loads of mainstream coverage of this.

The reason there hasn't been 'action to get them returned' is because we don't currently have any real diplomatic relations with Russia. Western world leaders can have an audience with Netanyahu to discuss Israel's actions and can put pressure on Israel and negotiate. They cannot do that with Putin and the Russian government because Russia has effectively cut most/all diplomatic ties with Western governments. We've already placed massive economic sanctions on Russia and short of starting a war with with them that would literally be World War III, there's very little else we can do.

Ringpeace · 25/04/2024 09:46

Also; you may not like it, but Eurovision is a major international event, of interest to millions of viewers worldwide. It's eminently newsworthy.

Begsthequestion · 25/04/2024 09:49

Rubbish about Trump

???

The Trump situation is incredibly important, particularly if you care about Ukrainian children!

US2gether · 25/04/2024 09:51

@MrsSkylerWhite

I have been following the tragedy in Gaza closely but completely missed the children abducted from Ukraine news. I saw the story this morning and was horrified for those parents.

I've not followed the war in Ukraine as much, work limits my time.

OP posts:
US2gether · 25/04/2024 09:53

@KreedKafer

I've missed it. Either I'm stupid, working too many hours, or following another conflict more closely.
