To ask you to decide where to put our garden steps

Posting here for traffic as we need to make a decision tomorrow but can't decide what to do for the best.

We are having our garden made over to make it a more usable space. It will be on two levels and we therefore need to decide where to have the steps placed. We had initially envisioned them being central but the landscaper said it might be a better idea to have them on the right hand side so that when we exit the back door, the steps are ahead of us, so it's a more fluid movement up to the upper level.

Red area in the photo is our garage door, back door is located at the bottom right of the photo. Arrow is pointing to the wall at which he anticipates the height of the upper level will be.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

I think you probably can't go too far wrong with any decision tbh.

Anyone suggested running the steps along the whole length?

thanKyouaIMee · 23/04/2024 21:27

Definitely off to one side, or across the full length. If the top is going to be patio then 100% off to one side as it makes the rest usable, having them centred limits the usable space imo.

We used to have steps that came towards the house and to the side. We then moved them central and recessed in the garden. This left the patio area between the garden and the house as a seating area. With the steps coming towards the house there was no room. I'll try and find a photo but not sure if I can as it was a few years ago.

Thank you for your replies so far - having the steps running all the way across wouldn't work because there's a manhole cover just next to where the wall will be built. It prevents us from having anything further forward.
