Birthday cards and presents!

So I just wondered what people's thoughts are on birthday cards/presents for kind of distant relatives (cousins, auntys etc).

If they buy you a card/present do you reciprocate to be polite?
If you had 4 cousins and 2 bought for you so you sent a card back, but the other 2 didn't, would you send the other 2 one too or would you respect that they clearly don't want to do it?

We were having a family conversation about it and some (more touchy) members think you should send cards to all so to not look rude or leave anyone out... I personally think if someone chooses to not send them you should respect that. They obviously don't want to get involved in sending cards for the sake of it so card-bombing them every year isn't necessary!! Surely they can't fee left out if they don't send them?

I'm aware this is a none issue, but just wondered what others thought?
