British iron dome

Just seen this online - apparently Penny Mordaunt is asking Rishi to increase defence spending ‘as a duty to citizens’
AIBU to think this is stupid and would be a waste of money plus I don’t think Rishi wants to protect citizens I was under the impression he wants anyone with MH issues / disabled to suffer.

The rich all have their bunkers why would they waste money on this ! Perhaps there’s a certain group of people who will think this is great and that the tories will protect our skies with an iron dome whilst protecting our streets from those pesky unwell people being a nuisance 😬

Maybe they have a friend who has moved on from PPE and can whip them up an iron dome …….

Sounds rather like Trump's wall.
I don't think there is much we can do vis-a-vis defence. We've left everything going on in the ME for so long we now have to wait and see. We barely defended Ukraine and our Trident doesn't work so whether we really are a nuclear power after decades of it eating a large slice of our national pie in funds is debatable. We really can't do much so I'm with you, no point throwing good money after bad at this point.

Imagine the difference even a tiny percentage of the defence budget could make to the nhs etc , but no the tories seem to want to run everything into the ground by the time they’ve finished (if they get the chance) there wouldn’t be many left to protect anyway. As long as they can have their cheese and wine parties and play big kids war toys though they’ll be happy

I believe The NHS gets more funding than our armed forces does.

RafaistheKingofClay · 21/04/2024 11:15

Given how much they’ve cut defence funding by, increasing it seems fine. Perhaps when we need to deploy a ship we’ll be able to find one that works then.

European leaders say we're in a pre-war period, we are witnessing the largest war in Europe since WW2 with a revanchist state threatening NATO and its neighbours. Our military is decimated, we have no civil defence plan. Defence should be a huge election issue and we should all be begging the government to increase to 3% and emulate prior Cold War spending imo. Can't enjoy nice things if they've been bombed into oblivion anyway. We need robust deterrence yesterday

Angela Rayner took two free samples of detergent 10 years ago, when the sign clearly said "one per customer".

I think you will find there are much more serious issues than civil defence at stake here.

21bn for failed Trident doesn't seem good value for money to me. Why was it not all over the papers how the military should be taken over by private companies to get better value for money? I suspect a large chunk of our military are owned by other countries in some way, as is our infrastructure.

I think you are missing the bigger question here, which is what did Keir Stamer know about BoldGate ? And when ?

We really need a public enquiry.

Tories repeatedly told us that we can't trust the EU and we've spent a decade teaching our country how bad experts are. Apathy isn't completely surprising. Or gov can't even decide what colours their party are at the moment so asking them to organise more than a piss up at No 10 seems unlikely.

cakeorwine · 21/04/2024 11:39

I thought the idea was that we had Trident so nobody would dare attack us as we would just nuke them back?

Or is Trident not the best solution when someone sends a few missiles our way? Maybe nuking them would be seen as an over reaction?

MagicFox · 21/04/2024 11:40

If we had to fight as part of NATO we wouldn't be talking about a direct invasion of the UK (which is when trident would come into play, as a response to existential destruction)
