To think I could be autistic?

The thought has always been 'there' but I've always brushed it off for one reason or another and put certain things down to anxiety. I've been learning to drive for nearly two years and I've really struggled with following and remembering instructions, I still find it hard to judge the distance between cars etc. This is just the most recent thing which has made me question it.

What were the signs that made you rethink?

Having three autistic children!

I did the AQ 50 then got diagnosed.

There's a thread for autistic women on here, if you want to join us.

Just from what you’ve said I’d say no. If there is other stuff then get assessed.

TheShellBeach · 20/04/2024 15:40

Have you taken the AQ50?

Blackcats7 · 20/04/2024 15:46

Not from what you have said so far. You could take the online test as people have suggested but I was told it is quite a blunt instrument and I certainly found I had to try to interpret some of the questions a bit.
I scored 41/50. Think the threshold is above 32 for women.

strawberryjeans · 20/04/2024 15:47

My AQ is 33 which is very borderline!

Have you looked at dyspraxia as well as autism? The judging distance with driving etc made me think of that

WinterDeWinter · 20/04/2024 15:59

I scored 30 out of 50 so low-ish, but I have diagnosed ADHD which often comes with processing issues.

I really struggle with directions, orienting myself and motorway driving. I often feel that I don't understand the 'depth' of the picture I'm seeing so I panic that a car on the hard shoulder some distance away might actually be closer than I think and/or in the far left driving lane (note I STILL can't remember whether this is the 'inside' or 'outside' lane despite checking once every six months or so for the last 20 years!).

Oddly I am a good dancer and don't lack spatial awareness, but the inattentive and impulsive aspects of my ADHD sometimes have the same results...
