A friend and I were discussing how we have never - in 15 years of being friends - spoken on the phone. We video chatted during lockdown, but mostly just keep in contact via What’s App and meeting up in person. This is the case with most of my friends and family. Unless it was an
actual emergency, ringing someone wouldn’t even occur to me.

Talking about it at work and most of my office felt similarly. However, it’s a small office, so that’s only nine people. 🤣

What’s your preference? Calling? Texting/What’s App? Video chatting? Saving it up till you can meet face to face?

What's app / texts.

I loathe phone calls!

mynameiscalypso · 19/04/2024 16:37

I'm so glad we've moved away from phone calls. Even my parents rarely ring now and we WhatsApp or email

Crunchymum · 19/04/2024 16:41

WhatsApp for the win (messages preferred, calls tolerated, video calls loathed)

RM2013 · 19/04/2024 16:43

I used to spend hours talking to friends on the phone as a teen. I hate anyone calling now unless it’s DH or my Mum!! Prefer to WhatsApp/text

MyPerfectHotel · 19/04/2024 16:43

WhatsApp for sure

HerRoyalNotness · 19/04/2024 16:45

Text. I only ever call my dad as he doesn’t have a smart phone and lives abroad. Hate talking on the phone

VioletCharlotte · 19/04/2024 16:46

WhatsApp/ text or in person with friends. I hate phone calls, so many awkward pauses and talking over each other as you don't know if they've finished speaking. I actually even prefer video calls over phone.

KreedKafer · 19/04/2024 16:46

WhatsApp, texting or messaging via social media.

Maddy70 · 19/04/2024 16:46

What's app. Phone calls fill me with anxiety

evtheria · 19/04/2024 16:47

Text/WhatsApp message - preferably with no introduction or greeting (hiya 🥰 you ok bla bla) just get straight into it. Or face to face, 2 hours of intense, all-laid-bare, all the gossip and secrets convo then don’t speak for another 2 years.

Most loathed: voice note

Coconuthotchocolate · 19/04/2024 16:48

WhatsApp- I spend all day talking in meetings and I hate it. Then I meet in person. The only person I speak to on the phone is my dad but mainly because he can’t work out how to text.

ArcticOwl · 19/04/2024 16:50

i prefer text/whatsapp. You know you're special to me if i'm willing to entertain a phonecall/video chat with you.

Even on discord group calls i refuse to put the camera on and tend to stay muted and use the text chat in the voice call

Yeah my kind of person. Same here. Phone calls = something bad has happened in my family. I generally hate talking. I will listen, quite happily, for ages. Please don't make me talk though.

God, I hate voice notes. I hate them so so much. My SIL leaves really long ones (sometimes they break up into three, that long) on the family what’s app group. You basically need to take notes to remember all the points covered. She’s lovely, but why?!

I love that there are so many of us who feel this way! 🤣🤣🤣

A bit of both really. I do use Whatsapp but I also chat on the phone to my grown up kids. And if I have a long thing to tell someone I will phone them because I cba to type it all out.

Carrier pigeon.

WhoTurnedTheLightsOff · 19/04/2024 16:57

WhatsApp but a big thumbs down to voice notes.

WhatsApp or email, depending on the type/length of the communication.

Plus phone for DD or DH if he's away.
And in person if possible but that's pretty rare.

BeaRF75 · 19/04/2024 17:04

What's App, or email for longer messages.
I loathe phone calls, so only do them for work.
Never made a video call in my life - they sound horrific.
I used to write a lot of letters to keep on touch with friends - I miss those days.

BeaRF75 · 19/04/2024 17:06

Oh, and in person is fine.
And I have never sent or received a voice note - I wouldn't know where to start!

I remember those days when i would sit on the stairs, stretching the twisty cord. We would talk nonsense (didn't think so at the time!) despite having only parted about an hour earlier 😂

Floortile · 19/04/2024 18:59

Texts, email ( not WhatsApp as it's owned by Meta), F2F or phone call .

Alwaysalwayscold · 19/04/2024 19:02

Ooh a lot of voice message hate. This is my preferred way, I hate texting! If I had to rank them mine would be-

  1. voice note
  2. phone call
  3. text

If anyone messages me on Instagram they're lucky to get a reply because I never check messages on there.
