If the rest of his room is small I’d turn it into his wardrobe to free up space. I’ve always found with my kids that they use/value space more than anything else - to spread out train track or playmobil villages, to practice splits and forward rolls, to lay out obstacle courses…

Will his bed slide into it tightly? Mine would have loved a bed in there! If not, proper fitted storage to maximise the space

What's the rest of the room like? How big is this space? Difficult to advise without knowing what space you have to deal with.

How big is the space?
I would turn half in to a wardrobe and half with shelves for toys/books

What are the dimensions? Is it ground level or high up? It might work for a child sized bed for a few years, to give him space to play on the floor.

Just to small for his bed as I thought that initially!
It's not a box room but not huge. Looking at ikea trofast unit for toys and need to get him a bed. A wardrobe would be a good idea. What would I do just but rails in ?

Check if just the mattress fits tight, as you could’ build your own bed, so to speak!

I would put in rails, yes. Ones that you can pull out so that you don't need to always crawl into the space to get things out.
