Does anyone have a British Shorthair Cat?

Hi

Nothing major just need some advice/clarification pl.

I'm worried about my cat. Her fur isn't shiny and has white bits like dandruff.

She eats Royal Canin BSH wet and dry food but likes the dry more so eats that as main meal and one wet pouch per day.

She is overweight as we do indulge too much with dreamies as she needs daily eye washing and hates being brushed so I throw them down and brush whilst she's eating.

I am trying to reduce food. My boyfriend doesn't listen though so feeds her all the time treats.

She goes in the back garden whenever she wants to just sit under bushes in the garden.

I've looked tonight an it said parasites could be a reason and my boyfriend has been winding me up saying she's probably got worms an all sorts crawling all over her.

Hates the vet so that's very stressful to take her. We play all time (she's not a lazy cat) and she drinks ok etc.

Any advice? Just before I take the vet and maybe some reassurance so I can sleep tonight.

She honestly is my world and my baby (I don't have any children) so I probably seem a bit over the top so apologies if so!

You might get a more knowledgable response in the litter tray board, OP!

Tell your boyfriend to fuck off though.

Any chance it’s dandruff? I’ve got 4 BSH atm and I’ve had cats all my life. I had a black and white tuxedo boy that suffered terribly with dandruff and we rubbed coconut oil into his skin which got rid of it (we have to do it about once a month now it’s under control or it still comes back)

worms don’t crawl over the skin so ignore your other half 🙄

When was she last de-flead and wormed?

If she's overweight she might be struggling to groom herself properly.

How long until she's next due at the vets for her annual jabs and check up? This doesn't urgent but it's something to raise then.

Cats are like people- they get dandruff. Over-brushing can make it worse. She might also be getting her summer coat and shedding the winter one which will make it look a bit drier. Don't give her too many Dreamies.

Her fur is probably just changing as we move into the warmer months, and my cat has always had terrible dandruff which is much more obvious as she has black fur. Apparently one Dreamie is the equivalent of us eating one doughnut though so probs best not to let her have too many 😳

Yep one of mine has dandruff. Gets worse around now as he sheds winter coat. It's not attractive but doesn't bother him

PicaK · 16/04/2024 20:42

Dandruff. I had mild worries because mine are rubbing more despite online regular worm/flea treatment but vet says its just response to warmer weather

StormingNorman · 16/04/2024 20:44

Little black one here and she tends to get dandruff around this time of year. A tiny drop of olive oil in their food can be good for their skin. Not too much or you’ll be forever cleaning the litter tray!

Toddlerteaplease · 16/04/2024 20:45

Try some salmon oil on her food.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

Wow didn't know about the dreamie one donut. Eye opener!

She is overweight so I panicked when I checked Google about diabetes and parasites.

Next check up and vaccination is due July. Uptodate flea and worm.

Had the day from hell so came home and her eye was closed over (needed cleaning) as this sometimes happens.

My boyfriend won't touch her eyes or groom her because she hisses and swipes at him. She only lets me do it. I've tried to get them ok with each other so if I'm not there he can clean them but she stresses out too much. Need doing daily.

So anyway I felt like a terrible mum when I've seen the state of her when I've come home from work and made the mistake of checking Google.

I know she is shedding winter coat. But currently looks so shabby and tufty.

We have two BSH sisters. They are fed the same and groomed the same amount. One has a beautiful coat. The other can sometimes feel a bit greasy and gets kitty dandruff. It doesn't seem to bother her so we just let her be.
