Is this the responsibility of landlord or tenant ?

When I moved in the kitchen Ceiling was like this (photo below). The ceiling fell in due to a bath leak when the previous tenant was living there so the landlord had it plastered but didn’t have it repainted prior to me moving in. During my tenancy a small leak appeared in the corner due to a drained pipe not connected properly (photo below). I reported this and the drain was put back on. landlord has said I am responsible for the cost of repainting of the whole ceiling due to the leak mark in the corner however the ceiling was never painted in the first place. I’m also moving out soon so he may try and take it out of deposit but it it is a tenancy deposit scheme

He's a cheeky bastard, isn't he.

Tell him to paint it himself before next tenant moves in.

And take lots of photos and claim the full deposit back.

Don't worry, definitely his responsibility and tenancy deposit scheme will support you

Definitely the landlord. Neither leak was your fault so you’re not responsible for making good the damage (even if it was painted when you moved in). Do you have photos of it being bare plaster when you moved in? The deposit protection scheme exists to prevent landlords from trying shit like this, send photos and they will side with you - we had similar issues and they agreed with us.

Thank you all that’s reassuring
@modgepodge yes I have photos with time and dates on too

Absolutely not your responsibility.

Landlords but do you want the fight? Tub of white paint is like £10 and wouldn't take very long to paint.

TimeandMotion · 15/04/2024 13:54

How much longer do you plan on living there?

If it’s a while, then you not only want him to accept the cost of repainting, you need him actually to repaint it.

He’s a cheeky fucker. Neither leak was your fault.
