Mother in law compares grandchildren

AIBU to be annoyed at mil for always comparing grandchildren?
I have DD , sil has DS, similar ages...
Mil will always go out of her way to talk about DGS if I talk about DDs new milestones ect.
I don't know if she realises she's doing it, but I just bite my tongue and don't say anything. In the back of my mind, I'm like shut up.

It's natural to compare, she might find it fascinating how they are both different and growing in different ways. Unless there is more to it and one is always unfavorable / golden child. If so ask her not to compare them next time she does it.

Was DGS the first grandchild?

wizzywig · 10/04/2024 20:36

Try comparing her to your own mum or friends mums. See how she likes it

Number1008 · 10/04/2024 20:37

@WillYouPutYourCoatOn no he's her 4th grandchild, my DD is her 5th

@wizzywig I always say how amazing my mum's cooking is 😂 but never say anything about hers, so maybe that's why she does it maybe haha!

If you generally take swipes at each other YABU to expect her to be any different.

On the other hand, do you know if she does the same to SIL? She may just be engaging in the information exchange.

@StormingNorman
I'm not sure she does it with SIL, but I know she favours SIL to DH

Same here. DD and DN same age. Comparisons stopped around age 7 (as did the identical presents). Yes it was irritating but irritating on both sides. Think my SIL was as irritated about comparisons as I was.

They are such wildly different characters and personalities now, no way would they be compared.

She probably talks to your SIL about your child. I do that. I tell one about the others child. It’s normal
