Just of of interest I thought I would check and it seems MN have decided to hide quite a few of the ways for its users to opt out of invasive tracking within its small print. So thought id share here, NO doubt I`ll get banned for this post 😂

But its good to know.

" We store your email address. we store things such as IP address, cookies and device ID. Within our user database, we assign your internet browser and device a unique 'Identity Number'. Against this identity number we record the topic of the content that your device is viewing or creating – in other words, your device’s 'reading habits'"

Captify analyses what users are searching for on Mumsnet and then use that data to re-target these users elsewhere on the web.

Don't you just opt out?

stupidmom · 09/04/2024 21:33

Clear your cookies.

Don't you just opt out?

No MN tracks your device even if you don't log on, you only have to visit the site, It tracks your IP, Device, Location and uses hidden cookies.

This is called Digital fingerprinting, https://www.pcworld.com/article/1684308/what-is-a-digital-fingerprint.html

Digital fingerprinting: The secret, insidious way you're tracked online

There's a new way to track your activity on the web, without a cookie or an IP address, and it's almost impossible to block.

Clear your cookies.

That does not work, you can see all what web pages collect on you here https://www.deviceinfo.me/ and its not done through cookies.

Have you considered not going on MN?

orchiddottyback · 09/04/2024 21:38

Have you considered not going on MN?

It does not bother me as I'm tech savvy enough to know how to spoof my digital finger prints, but thanks for your concern.

Just thought I would share what some might be unaware of.

Why will you be banned, it’s printed in a public document

Elcad · 09/04/2024 21:43

Thank you for reading the small prints. I don't the idea of being tracked but what can we do about it?

stupidmom · 09/04/2024 21:45

They fucking own us!
What if you adjust the cookies settings, does it help OP?

stupidmom · 09/04/2024 21:48

Just had a look at your link OP it's horrific. Would VPN help at least?

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 09/04/2024 21:49

I actually think this is so interesting...I definitely wasn't aware.

WalkingaroundJardine · 09/04/2024 21:50

I have a do not track option on my IPad / iPhone which I have switched on. Not sure if that helps. But I have noticed a lot of advertising but it’s more personalised to the thread rather than what I am doing off MN.

orchiddottyback · 09/04/2024 21:52

@Elcad @stupidmom No blocking cookies doe not help, they take all your device information, browser information and connection information when you access their site, this not about cookies.

Rather than telling MN how to block people preventing this I would suggest you look up how to block Digital Foot printing, or use other well know browser addons like "user agent switcher" with a free VPN addon for your browser.

Addons like Privacy badger help also.

I have the Safari do not track option on and use an adblocker, websites like MN seem unusable without it.

stupidmom · 09/04/2024 21:55

Thanks OP.
Norton?

BettyShagter · 09/04/2024 21:59

It's a bit dramatic to say you have no doubt you'll be banned for copy and pasting MNHQ's own words?

You mean words and links they have hidden in fine print most likely 99% of their users don't read to generate their revenue. If they don't fine, if they do don't worry ill be back to let you know 😂
