Too fat for leggings?

I’m a size 16 these days, I love the simple black leggings and trainers look and it’s also so comfy, but I never wear it. How do you wear them, being bigger? Or do you? No way am I showing my bum, upper thighs, stomach area, so would have to be something longer? I’m thinking for shopping/school run etc, sick of wearing jeans

In winter I just wear my long coat which goes to my knees! Now that’s getting too warm I’ll wear with short dresses/long tops, tunics, etc.

Ohyeahitsaneclipsetonight · 08/04/2024 17:54

@TimesChangeAgain What sort of long tops though and how would it work if it’s hot?

Surely leggings are for all body shapes? Wear with a dress or tunic that is above the knee. Thin material, short sleeve for hot weather, cropped leggings also an option

Runningonempty01 · 08/04/2024 18:14

I think good quality leggings can be more flattering than jeans on all sizes. I like bright colours and patterns too. The game changer with leggings is spend what you would on jeans. I like patagonia and sweaty betty ones ( look our for sales)

I agree that larger ladies can look good in good quality leggings and a well cut top. I'm on the larger side but have absolutely enormous calves, and leggings look awful on me for that reason. But if I had more elegant lower legs I'd definitely be in leggings and longline shirts year round.

babaisyou · 08/04/2024 18:23

I have big thighs/ calves and I just don't wear leggings. I have never found any that look good on me. I wear slim fit or straight jeans/ trousers, or shorts/ dresses in summer. The only time I would wear leggings is with a dress over them, or for exercising.

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 08/04/2024 18:28

Don’t wear with dresses that trend was 2000s .

you can wear them whatever size you are. I can’t stand jeans so leggings it is .

Fizzadora · 08/04/2024 18:34

I'm a size 18 and in winter wear Joe Browns leggings (thick, quite flattering fabric) with an attached skirt to try and disguise my belly, but I wear them with boots as I think my legs are too short and curvy for flats or trainers. As soon as it's warm enough I wear crop jeggings and Skechers flats.
I'm retired and mostly in the garden so don't need to dress up.

Luxell934 · 08/04/2024 18:42

Literally wear any top, jumper or hoody that covers your arse?

TimesChangeAgain · 08/04/2024 18:44

I feel like you’re over thinking this. Wear a top that’s long enough to cover the bits you want covered. It won’t make much difference in the heat, that more depends on the sleeves and weight of fabric.

RosaBaby2 · 08/04/2024 18:46

Yes anything that covers your bum is good to go!

Going by the recent trend of everything 2000s they'll soon be fashionable again. I've seen skirt trousers for sale recently!

TunaCrunchy · 08/04/2024 19:05

Anything that covers your bum, oversized sweatshirts, a t shirt with a shirt partially undone works well or a coatigan etc .

I wouldn’t wear them when it’s hot.

FeelingSoOverwhelmed · 08/04/2024 19:09

Oversized sweatshirts, oversized or slouchy fit t-shirts, or a longline vest and a checked or denim shirt over are looks that I like! And size 16 is absolutely fine to wear them 😊
I don't tend to wear them when it's really hot.

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 08/04/2024 19:15

Leggings are meant to be worn with long tops aren't they? That come to your mid thigh to hide lumps and bumps.
I know we did first time around in the 80s.
Not to show your bum etc.

Ohyeahitsaneclipsetonight · 08/04/2024 19:16

@PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance I see lots of mums/women with slightly shorter tops, def not covering, but they look great, so 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm a size 16 and wear mine with oversize Hush tops, sweatshirts etc with trainers

Uniqlo do plaid shirts that look good over a T-shirt with the leggings tucked into Converse

I don't wear them after Spring as I don't like the dress/legging look.

BlueScrunchies · 08/04/2024 19:19

I’m struggling to lose baby weight and am most comfortable in leggings and a long jumper / jumper dress, looks nice too 😊

Streel · 08/04/2024 19:24

Oversized sweatshirts or longline hoodies. Longline gillet or long coat if it’s cold.

I live in this at weekends!

I sack off black leggings once the weather warns up, though, as I don’t like long t-shirts or tunics and like you I am NOT letting my big arse and gut hang out.

Ohyeahitsaneclipsetonight · 08/04/2024 19:25

I don’t like with a dress either or a t-shirt tbh, just wouldn’t look right on me

Honestly I don't think leggings look flattering on anyone who isn't slim. They show absolutely everything, including anything that wobbles when you walk.

Shatteredallthetimelately · 08/04/2024 20:53

YOURS clothing do some really nice long button up blouses/shirts/tops.

I don't think this is true of good quality leggings in the correct size. I guess there comes a point where nothing hides the flab, but certainly black leggings with a loose bum covering top are fine for a size 16 I would say. Better than tight jeans anyway

Sadly sweaty Betty have gone off the rails quality wise. Sold out and they are now made really cheaply. Always running a sale. Its like those 'everything must go sales that are permanently on
