I think you have to pay a lot more for actual mature cheddar than previously. The cheapest three price points in any supermarket, it's a weird texture and I think has been fucked around with to make it taste mature when it's not really. I noticed this a while ago.

WheresFluffy · 06/04/2024 14:32

Agree, I try to buy decent cheese at farm shops or markets.
Costs more but so worth it.
Hide it in the fridge, too!

OneAmberGuide · 06/04/2024 14:32

I think you are buying cheap cheese.
Pay a bit more get a better flavour.

the80sweregreat · 06/04/2024 14:32

There was a different cheese thread a while back and m and s strong Cornish cheddar was mentioned as being as good as the old Canadian cheddar that you can't seem to buy anymore. That was really nice and had a nutty flavour
Most ordinary cheese is a bit disappointing these days , but I just thought it was my taste buds changing

Auburngal · 06/04/2024 14:51

Take cheese out at least half an hour before you eat it - in a sandwich, cheese n biscuits etc

Can’t be doing with mild cheddar.

The80sweregreat Thank you ,I thought it was just me!

M&S Cornish Cove and a Cornish cruncher are good for supermarket ones. Look forward to hearing about the Mouse in the house one

vincettenoir · 06/04/2024 15:17

Your taste buds lose sensitivity as they age. They probably do taste blander than they did.

dottydodah · 11/04/2024 13:40

Hi ladies .Mouse in the house cheese has arrived .Very tasty and certainly strong! might be a little much for some .Arrived promptly and well packaged

I thought the only benefit of Brexit might be that freed from EU regulation we might get some really great, stinking, unpasteurised cheese. Turns out we don’t even have that.

We buy unpasteurised cheese all the time (in France), it's nothing to do with the EU!

You can buy unpasteurised French, Italian and Spanish cheese in my local slightly crappy supermarket, it's completely normal. You can't buy English cheese any more though, that really is because of Brexit.

I don’t know the site you ordered from, @dottydodah, but for high days and holidays (aka the whole of December or when I need a treat) I order from:

https://www.thecourtyarddairy.co.uk/

Definitely not cheap, but you do get proper cheese.

Buy cheese online: The Courtyard Dairy, an award winning cheesemonger of specialist cheese

Just don't buy from supermarkets.

I found Waitrose has really strong nice cheddar

Haydenn · 11/04/2024 14:39

My lovely local farm shop has an excellent selection of local cheese. Some are definitely not for the faint of heart

Oooh! I see from their website that Waitrose have a reduced fat extra mature cheddar. I have to have reduced fat cheese since I got gallstones and usually have to settle for reduced fat mature rather than extra mature. I will have to try the Waitrose one. Thanks for the info.

Sainsbury's mature Cheddar has gone downhill recently. The last three packs I've bought have had an odd waxy texture, and have gone off before their use-by date. I've stopped buying it now.
