Booking a hotel room. A double for one

I have never changed my booking from two people to one when booking a normal hotel room for myself that’s not specified as a single.

I’m reading a ridiculous book called the spare wife and in it this seems to be part of the plot that a double room is booked and two people are mentioned, but surely that’s just default.

I always change it to one. Sometimes it is cheaper.

What's your question?

It is cheaper, saved £10 doing this recently.

It is sometimes cheaper to book single occupancy, and you could pay for two breakfasts if you select a double for 2 people.
