To wonder how the Facebook algorithm throws up friend suggestions?

I am not much of a Facebook user. I have an account but am not even FB friends with many of my RL friends. I have used it mainly to follow updates from one of dd's old extracurricular groups and to stay in touch with a particular group of people that I previously worked with. I never really post anything but will occasionally look at updates on the feed.

I had previously disabled all of the FB notifications on my phone but I must have inadvertently changed the settings at some point, so I am now receiving updates about who has posted what as well as friend suggestions. Some of these are people who I know, others are not.

Today, the algorithm has suggested a RL friend who actually passed away from cancer about 8 years ago. Her FB page is still active so I assume that her family decided not to memorialise it, or whatever you call it. The notification upset me a bit, as it came out of nowhere.

Can anyone tell me how the algorithm works? I'm going to turn it off if I can, but I was curious to know why her name suddenly came up after all these years.
