Car Insurance renewals just a such a blatant rip-off

I always shop around every year when the renewal comes up. This time it had gone up from £296 to £503. No accidents, same car, absolutely all parameters the same. I went ahead with a different company that was able to give the same terms as the old policy for just over £300. When I rang the first company to cancel the renewal (which you can't do online) I was on hold for 20 minutes and then inevitably was begged to stay with them and they would match the price of the other company. I asked the guy if they could offer me insurance for £300, why not just do that then? Had they quoted me anything within £50 of the old price I'd have stayed and just let it auto-renew. Its so obvious they just bank on people being too busy and stressed to remember and the exorbitant renewal goes through unchallenged. I can't stand how so much of modern life is like this. The only reason I have time to do this with car, pet and now broadband prices is because I'm a teacher on school holidays. If it was term time I'd probably just let them roll. It just feels so grabby and exploitative. No voting, just having a rant but AIBU to think there's something rotten at the core of so many businesses now and absolutely no desire to genuinely give people a good deal?

Totally agree. My car insurance quote came through in Feb for nearly double last years price, I rang them to ask about the price and they immediately reduced it by £210 “because you’re an existing customer”. Considering they already knew I was an existing customer, because they sent me the RENEWAL quote, I asked why on earth that discount wouldn’t have been reflected in the renewal quote I’d been sent. He didn’t have an answer for that.

It’s all a bit of a scam in the hopes people won’t notice or will be too busy to ring and query it!

Mine nearly doubled and they wouldn't reduce it. I went elsewhere and got it a lot cheaper but still more than I paid the year before

Mine has consistently been reducing over the last five years. Swapped car from Honda CRV to a Mitsubishi Outlander in summer 2021.

2021 - 506.49 (Honda)

2022 - 455.13
2023 - 426.44
2024 - 400.68

I'm in Ireland. Our cars cost more to buy than in the UK.

Talking about car insurance, i had to recently scrap my car as it had gearbox failure. I went online & found an amazing car, it was a UK spec polo imported from Japan. 2017 & in mint condition, with only 20,000 on the clock.
Insurance for this car was a joke, quotes came in from £800 to £1,600 a year! Absolutely shocking. I am 59 & been drinking for 25 years with no claims & 100% clean license.
I then found another nearly identical car, one year older but with only 14000 on the clock. Not an import. Price was about the same. Got insurance quote for £450 a year!!
The world of insurance is insane & as corrupt as the Government.

Hundro percent agree. Had the exact same rant from DS last week. His was going up from £400ish to around £750 he only just saw the emails in the nick of time and spent an afternoon cancelling and then getting new quotes.

Scammy wankers.

Give up the drinking and you can afford the insurance 🤗

Yes. My insurance wanted to raise mine from £68 to £100 a month for no claims, no changes on renewal. Tesco.quoted me £48 a month so I rang mine to cancel. They then beat the price without me.asking
