What’s this rash on my 5 year old (pic included)

It came on yesterday, starting on his back and front. This morning he’s got it on his face like this - very fiery looking and he’s itchy all over including his scalp and hands.

He’s had no fever throughout and no signs of being particularly unwell, except not wanting breakfast this morning. We were out and about yesterday and he was fine. The rash didn’t appear until the afternoon.

I’ve called 111 and waiting for a call back.

How does it feel to the touch? Is it rough like sandpaper? Have you had a look st his tongue? What does that look like?

Looks like a viral rash, could possibly be scarlet fever but if he isn't unwell then unlikely.

My DD had a rash like this when she got hand foot and mouth.

If hes well in himself then probably no medical attention required at the moment.

@Bigearringsbigsmile No, the rash doesn’t feel rough to touch, it feels pretty smooth.
His tongue looks normal to me as far as I can see.
He's talking, playing and drawing like normal.

The main thing is it seems itchy and including his scalp which is odd.
Is it worth getting an antihistamine just in case?

Have you changed washing powder or bath products recently?

Bigearringsbigsmile · 02/04/2024 09:27

An antihistamine can't hurt. His back looks like scarlet fever but it would be rough. You're doing the right thing getting it checked out.

111 called back and said go to the pharmacy and see what they say.

Best of luck at the pharmacy, it’s positive that he is otherwise well.

Spacecrew · 02/04/2024 16:24

Pharmacist said it could be a post viral rash or allergic reaction and prescribed an anti histamine. He’s not itching as much since he’s taken it.
Rash is still visible.
