Dyeing my white grey blonde hair natural blonde with box dye

Need advice about box dyeing my light blonde hair a darker more natural shade. I can't afford a salon. Dyed my hair ash blonde all my life but hair has now got a great amount of white in it due to my age. Now it's a very bright blonde and the roots come through white so needs a darker colour.
Been using a golden tone 9.3 as now if I use any ash it either doesn't look much different, or goes slightly green!

Have tried L'Oréal 8.3 but it didn't make it dark enough and looked a bit too golden.
Any recommendations?

Try Esalon! I've used them several times, they charge 10 quid for the first order. They work out the best colour for you etc if you're not happy with the results they can adjust the colour. I'm waiting on an order as my really dark hair has annoying greys sprouted along my parting

I would try a toner first rather than a box dye. Find the best stockist of hair dyes in your area and go and have a look at the toners and select the shade you think you want. Toners are less harsh on your hair but should give you the look you want - Bleach London just like honey may be good on your hair?

Oh my, you've basically just posted a picture of my hair!! Following with interest, I can't get anything at all to 'stick' on the white so would be interested to see if there is a solution!

Cathbrownlow · 02/04/2024 08:08

I wouldn't colour with a box dye, how about using purple shampoo/conditioner/toner, as someone upthread said? I rather like your colour hair.

Laiste · 02/04/2024 08:24

Grey (white with age) hair is quite resistant to holding on to colour isn't it.

I have greying temples now and the dark brown dye i've been using for years to shade my roots (balayage) washes out of those greys after a week or two while the still mousy brown rest of the roots stay dyed dark brown forever!

Anyway ... you want a nice golden blonde OP. Honestly i think you are the best expert on your own hair and it's trial and error to be honest. Googled the 9.3 and it looks a nice colour ... ? Does it not stay in?

God, that’s me. I’ve always been proud of my natural hair, hairdressers always rave about it. Then I saw myself in photos and it just takes over, it’s sooo bright. I’ve got some glaze toner, haven’t got round to,using yet, but hopeful.

TokyoSushi · 02/04/2024 12:03

Yes agree, my hair isn't even very grey, it's about 70% 'grandma snowy white' at 44!!

It's helpful that people think I have it this colour on purpose though!

TokyoSushi · 02/04/2024 12:06

See, same!

That's the problem. I feel your pain here! Im really fair, and with age instead of going grey, I have gone white at the roots. Its been 6 weeks since I dyed it so that's why you can see so much white. The olia Garnier 9.3 colour is nice and switched it from L'Oréal 9.3 as my hair was getting damaged and this has no ammonia. I find olia colour to be actually better than L'Oréal and my hair condition is much better.
It does cover the roots and that looks would have been great in my 20's or 30's but I want a more toned down, darker look at the roots. Im worried about going a darker 8.3 or even 7.3 in case in goes very golden/reddish, and with so much white if you add to much ash you can end up with green hair! (Happened to me once actually at a salon so that is why I box dye now).
I have googled and you tubed but there is very little advice about going from light blonde to a darker natural blonde and virtually nothing about dyeing white hair a darker blonde!

Thanks, I did look at that but got put off by trust pilot reviews a lot which were bad.

That’s so pretty. People pay a lot of money for that colour.

Bluestar1212 · 03/04/2024 22:45

That does look so like my hair! I'm 47.
What do you currently use?
Some people do actually try and achieve this look but I think for me I would like a more natural look.
Is the back of your hair darker? That's another problem I have. My top hair is going a kinder platinum where as the back of my head is darker blonde.
Please let me know if you find a solution.

Let me know how the glaze goes? What one are you using?.

9.1 is an ash tone, so if you have white hair, it's going to show the white more.
9.3 has a golden tone. Have you tried that? It will cover your white. Olia just made it slightly warmer, because there so much white it balances it out to make a nice pure blonde colour. I could continue to use it as it is a nice cooour, but I just feel I need my hair more toned down now as I'm older now.

Thank you! Maybe Im just feeling it's not appropriate for my age! If I use purple tone it would go even whiter, as that's what happens if I use ash tones. I'm going to try looking at toners. I also was looking at the company bleach London which some one else suggested.

I love your hair colour .
do you have a sallys salon near you ? They seem to give good advice. I would use a toner - and the good thing is when they wear off , you could choose a slightly different shade for variation too .

Bluestar1212 · 25/04/2024 11:45

Update! Took the plunge and went to a neutral shade and one level darker olia 8.0. it's perfect, really is neutral. Not as dark as on the box thank goodness as I didn't want it to be, but has toned down my colour, covered the grey and put some darker tones in so my hair looks more natural. It's a really good.
