Any vets or dog experts here?! Are these dog kidney stones?

Currently house sitting and looking after my mums elderly dog and she’s thrown these up today in the porch. She definitely hasn’t eaten anything she shouldn’t have. I know it looks a bit like dog poo but I came into the room just as she was being sick. Could they be kidney stones? Shall I take her to the vet?!

I wouldn't be even wasting any time asking on here. I'd have scooped the stuff up to show the vet and taken dog with you. You can't take risks with elderly animals.

Why? Dogs vomit all the time for no real reason.

OP is the dog showing any other signs of being unwell? Behaviour changes, panting, moving a lot more than normal, not eating, not drinking, drinking loads - anything like that?

Has the dog been in the garden eating crap?

You can’t vomit up kidney stones, so no. They look as though she has been eating something strange, almost like coal ? Check with a vet .

Yes they do vomit for no reason. I just get pissed off with people coming onto Mumsnet to ask health questions about elderly animals which could possibly delay in correct diagnosis. Why not just phone a vet for guidance straight away instead of wasting time coming on here.

How would it vomit kidney stones?
They badly hurt, because you can't pass them, because they are in your intestants.
They cannot ever come out a stomach. In that sense you do not need to worry.
You need to decide if it is important to find out what is in his vomit.
If the dog acts sickly, get him checked.
Good luck.

Kidney stones come out with your urine. Believe me, I know!!!

A dog with kidney stones would be in excruciating pain and probably be peeing blood. That's not a kidney stone. Hope you get things sorted x

Oh they DO come out? Sorry, I only knew they do not come out the other way.
I know they hurt though. If hurt is enough of a word😣

Those are kidney stones- kidneys aren't connected to your gastrointestinal tract so you can't vomit them up (the pain and malaise caused by kidney stomes can occasionally cause vomiting, which is perhaps where the confusion has arisen).

Those look like actual stones, or coal. If the dog is well in herself, hasn't vomited since, has eaten this evening and kept it down and is drinking and urinating ok I'd been inclined to sit tight.

Vetoncall · 01/04/2024 23:02

I'm a vet. I can't tell what those are from the photo, but given that she vomited them up they're not kidney stones. If she has no other symptoms and is acting as normal you can keep an eye on her and see how she goes. Any further vomiting, dry retching, change in toileting habits, change in eating/drinking habits, lethargy etc. then I would recommend getting her seen by her vet.
