To ask if you REALLY stand up if you have a standing desk?

If you WFH and have a height adjustable desk, do you really use it to stand up?

Thinking about getting one but wondering if I'll just be lazy and end up sitting down all the time anyway?

Yes I do but I only have one because of debilitating back pain. I find I have to sit to do proper work but it gets very very painful so I stand for meetings and emails.

TitaniasAss · 31/03/2024 08:22

It's not 'lazy' to sit at a desk while you work.

karriecreamer · 31/03/2024 08:22

I've got one and use it all the time.

It is if you’ve bought a standing desk to use 😉

BlueMum16 · 31/03/2024 08:24

I also stand at a desk. I bought one for home and have one in the office. I'll sit for office meeting or lunch at home. It was tiring at first so gradually build up to a full day. I also had a bad bad.

Cheeesus · 31/03/2024 08:25

OP, my DH has one and tends to use it in the morning but not the afternoon, which works as a compromise.

Timeandtune · 31/03/2024 08:25

I use mine all the time. I don’t stand up all day now. If I have a 2 hour plus meeting I will probably sit down halfway through and by teatime I am getting a bit weary.

BovrilMartini · 31/03/2024 08:26

I have a broken standing desk and I really miss standing. I used to do a couple of hours a day standing. Then sit down for lunch. Helped break up the day and definitely helped my back

apcavcwtf · 31/03/2024 08:26

Yes I wouldn't be standing all day, maybe an hour alternating throughout or morning sitting and stand after lunch.

They have 100x60 ones on amazon for about £100 so may go ahead and order.

Everyone is different but I'd find standing all day far worse than sitting. If there's one thing that makes my back hurt it's standing. Not walking or running but standing itself, I really hate it. I hated jobs when I was on my feet all day and couldn't wait to work in an office, and never find sitting uncomfortable. I wouldn't be able to concentrate or do my job standing up.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 31/03/2024 08:27

I've got one. I use it quite a lot, but not sll the time.

CrispsnDips · 31/03/2024 08:28

I stand for 20 mins, sit for 20 mins, move about a bit , fidget, put washing on, stand at the desk for a bit, sit, stand, fidget, repeat 😆

It's not. I don't think I'm being lazy if I decide to sit down for a meeting on occasion.

StubbleTurnips · 31/03/2024 08:29

I have a standing desk and walking pad under, I use it generally 8-10am - sit down mid morning. Will stand for meetings though, and generally go back to standing around 3pm. I fidget a lot at my desk and this works for me. I always make sure before I leave my desk it’s set for the next morning, otherwise I can sit all day and regret it.

PandaCwtch · 31/03/2024 08:36

Yes, I stand probably 60-70% of the day. I tend to sit if I'm doing a lot of typing, but for reading/editing standing works, and I tend to stand in all online meetings. Something to note is that you aren't really supposed to stand still using them - you may find that gets quite uncomfortable. I shuffle about, stretch etc., in a way that I can't if I'm sitting.

TTPD · 31/03/2024 08:38

We have some in the office and people stand at them all the time.

LittleMissCantBeWrong1 · 31/03/2024 08:41

Lol a girl in my office was ranting the other day about the “smug standing desk pricks” it amused me because I kind of know what she means 🙊

FloofCloud · 31/03/2024 08:42

Yes absolutely, for about 15-30 minutes 2-3 times a day, sometimes more - I have stiffness in legs and joints and it really helps

autumn1610 · 31/03/2024 08:43

should get yourself an anti fatigue mat too. This helps when standing

karriecreamer · 31/03/2024 11:56

The thing about standing is that you're more likely to move around.

When I used to sit all day, I used to "batch" tasks like going to the copier, going to the filing cabinet, going to the loo and kitchen at the same time, etc., simply because it was more "effort" to constantly get up from a seated position, hence the "lazy" comment by someone above I think.

When I stand up, I do things more spontaneously, so I'm not just standing, I'm taking more "trips" to the files, to the copier, to the loo, to the kitchen, etc.

I could do a few thousand more steps per day when I was at a standing desk than I'd do at a sitting desk.
