Clothes steamers, AIBU?

I am fed up with ironing school and work shirts and blouses, DH helps but I just cannot face it any longer.

Will a clothes steamer change my life?

Which one shall I get? It needs to be easy to hold and handle but supper effective.

My previous employer had one and I think they are great! It's like as you run the steam head over the clothes the creases disappear. I'd buy one if I wasn't broke

Meh, they're ok, they're not hugely quicker than ironing in my experience.

HelloMiss · 27/03/2024 15:41

I don't really rate them tbh

Candlewiff · 27/03/2024 15:42

If you’ve loads of uniform to do, I’d say you’re probably just as quick with an iron. I use mine for quick one of items of clothing.

MagnetForDust · 27/03/2024 15:44

It's mostly uniform blouses and shirts really. I hate ironing. 😭

Buying easy iron school shirts, washing them on an easy iron setting (ie low spin speed), and hanging them on hangers to dry makes your life a lot easier because you don’t have to iron them then. Especially as they have to wear a blazer over them at all times anyway.

Evaka · 27/03/2024 15:45

Could you send out your ironing? I think steamers are better for getting creases out of linen/silk. I never use my for anything that needs a sharp pressing..

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 27/03/2024 15:45

I bought one and found it made clothes look very slightly better. Not worth it imo

MagnetForDust · 27/03/2024 15:46

I hang them on hangers after washing, we have to buy school specific ones, they are not 'easy iron' sadly. I will try the easy iron setting on the washing machine, thanks.

That’s annoying! But yes, try that setting - I did find it helped a lot.

I like my steamer for delicates and one offs where it's quicker than getting the ironing board out

But per item it takes longer.

N0tfinished · 27/03/2024 15:57

I never found it to be a huge time saver. Useful when something is hard to iron (flounces or texture) but not otherwise. Definitely doesn't help on cotton shirts etc, they need the heat & pressure of an iron

TokyoSushi · 27/03/2024 15:58

I have one, it's 'ok' but it's not the magic solution that you're looking for OP!

Motherofpearlxoxo · 27/03/2024 16:01

We stayed in a really flash hotel on honeymoon that had one, I was excited (sad I know) as had really wanted one…it wasn’t very good and no easier than ironing!

Bigcat25 · 27/03/2024 17:00

Steamers are ok for jersey type fabrics or synthetics. Stiff cotton blouses won't work well.
