Hello, going to a custom party soon for a 40th birthday party. What can I buy as a gift?

Bottle of champagne? or AIBU?

Please don’t buy champagne!! I got about 8 bottles for my 40th and it gives me terrible heartburn!! Have a chat with the person, or get them a voucher for the equivalent price for a store or restaurant they like. It doesn’t have to be loads of money; just the cost of the champers. It’s not “soulless” or lacking in imagination to buy a voucher it’s much better than getting something unwanted. The person can put several together and choose something really nice snd indulgent for themself. We did this among a group of friends for a big birthday - agreed we would all get a £30 voucher each for the same retailer and the birthday girl bought herself a gorgeous handbag. She would never have spent £120 of her own money on a posh bag but loved picking it out and says she thinks of us every time she uses it.

Whereas I would much rather have £120 of wine ... That would be half a case of not expensive biodynamic wine.

What's a 'custom party'?

Depending on your budget I have bought voucher for afternoon tea, a facial voucher, a heated gilet (they really wanted one) and a restaurant voucher a local restaurant they loved and went often.

Gifts I received for my 40th and 50th were

voucher for my favourite restaurant

voucher for a spa day

friends all chipped in for a bread maker (best present ever)

massive box of chocolates and Champagne

magnum of Champagne

electric toothbrush (a relative asked if I actually needed anything)

A posh candle

Next voucher

jewellery from DH twice which I loved.

All these gifts were fab.
