To expect somewhere that is open 24/7…..

….to answer messages at reasonable times?

Needing to find a new (weights based) gym ASAP. There’s an independent one locally that’s open 24/7. Went on Friday lunchtime - no one there to show me round. Messaged on Friday afternoon to request a viewing, still no response. 🤔

When it says 24/7, it means you have access at those times, not someone is available or able to answer the phone then. Still shit though.

TheSnowyOwl · 24/03/2024 13:41

I wonder if the person who deals with the messages works more typical office hours so you’ll hear back during the week.

OneMoreTime23 · 24/03/2024 13:46

I messaged during the week. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Would assume people want to see the gym at weekends so someone would be around during the day but nothing at all seems a bit dodgy.

I didn’t expect someone to be sitting there at 2am on Friday. But did expect that somewhere open every day would have someone monitoring messages every day.

Just because it's open doesn't mean there's senior staff or even PTs present. There was a sad story of a guy who died at the gym, there was no first aider there and only a cleaner, who didn't notice him in time to raise the alarm.
The office is probably shut the majority of the time.

OneMoreTime23 · 24/03/2024 13:54

The owners don’t need to be on site to answer messages?

OP posts:
OneMoreTime23 · 24/03/2024 13:55

They have CCTV in case of issues. Not sure who is monitoring that.

I would almost guarantee the person who checks their emails works Mon-Fri 9-5ish

OneMoreTime23 · 24/03/2024 13:59

Yes, I get the point. I messaged at 12pm on Friday. Well within the very reasonable 9-5.

They may have been busy for the remaining 5 hrs of that shift though.
You are after an almost instantaneous response. I think we are just so used to it now, with devices constantly in our hands, that we grow impatient for anything that takes slightly longer than we feel it should.

You get the point but you don't want to hear it?

If I messaged at noon on a Friday I'd expect an answer by noon on Tuesday. Most places will say you'll get a response within 48 hours, and I wouldn't include the weekend. If you need a gym with quicker response times it sounds like you should look elsewhere.

Lol, you're being v unrealistic expecting a response in that timeframe.

batsandeggs · 24/03/2024 14:04

If I emailed somewhere at lunch time on Friday I wouldn’t expect a response until next week. They’re not just sitting around waiting for your email. People who do reception have loads of other tasks too.

Next time, call.

ohdamnitjanet · 24/03/2024 14:07

Blimey, give them a chance. Might be busy, might be on holiday, might be sick, who knows.

TeaKitten · 24/03/2024 14:11

YABU, it’s not even been one work day since. On Friday they may have had lots of enquiries and yours is lower down the list, they may be waiting to find out the answer to your question, staff may have had the afternoon off due to sickness or holiday. And it’s not exactly life or death is it. Chill out or find another gym.

Summerhillsquare · 24/03/2024 14:18

Ha, I'm shopping for a new gym ATM so this is familiar. The customer service is dire. Some of the places want 50 quid a month!

If there was a phone number I’d have called it while I was standing outside.

they only accept Facebook messages, so that’s what I did.

Where I live there aren’t many other options. My current gum
closed without notice hence my urgency. I work away half the week so need to get something sorted quickly and simply. Clearly my expectations are totally unreasonable!

If it’s a pure gym / the gym type of chain you book the induction on the app

Yep they are. If it was a week ago I’d understand but the reality is you will probably hear back on Monday. Have you tried phoning them?

It’s not. It’s a local, independent gym owned by a husband and wife. As far as I know there are no staff.

I don’t need an induction. I need to know what kit they have so that my PT can adjust my programme.

Again, they have no phone number listed.
