Do I need to go to A and E

Earlier today I was eating chicken. When I swallowed it felt like the chicken was too big to go down my throat, I could still breathe but not properly. I drank water which made the pain worse, I then vomited up the chicken and in my vomit there was a small amount of blood. I’ve got some upper back pain now and still feel like something is in my throat but may just be because of the choking.

do I need to go to a and e or am I just panicking?
im scared that I may have aspirated the food but I don’t know and I don’t want to waste a and es time either

I think you may have scratched your throat which is why it feels as if there is something still stuck in there. I don't think you need to go to A&E. If you are still worried ring 111, they should be able to help.

If in doubt, call 111 x

Aspirated is when food goes into your lungs. If you're breathing normally and not coughing I don't think you need a&e.

It does sound like you have scratched your throat as per PP, you could try 111 or GP in morning if you're worried.

Thank you all. I know it’s a silly post but it was a terrifying experience and really painful too! I’m going to get an early night sleep and see how I feel in the morning. Googling aspiration probably wasn’t my brightest idea, so I think anxiety has kicked in xx

Call 111

I've scratched my throat a few times, it feels awful, really painful, and gives you an awful fright. I've burnt it once too, think I had a blister. If you are feeling ok with your breathing I think you are safe enough.

misssunshine4040 · 21/03/2024 20:47

@Zombieof3 not a silly post at all, please don't think that. Sounds like a horrible experience for you.
I would call 111 for some advice and reassurance

I have had a pill get stuck before (no idea how I managed it!) and for quite a while after it felt like it was still stuck there, it did ease up though. I wouldn't go to A&E but see how you are over night. Call 111 if you get concerned or see your GP in the morning if it still feels odd.
