I know I’m not BU. I’m just ranting.

In town with DH. We hear a little EEK of brakes. Not, you know, a screech but enough to make a noise.

We look to the road and there’s a car next to us whose driver has had to brake sharply to avoid hitting the car in
front. Obviously he didn’t notice til the last second because he’s LOOKING DOWN AT HIS PHONE.

Next to him in the passenger seat is a young woman WITH A BABY UNSECURED ON HER LAP.

How fucking thick and irresponsible do you have to be? EVERYONE knows the dangers of having a baby on your lap.

I’m raaaaging. In fact yes. I’m FUMMING.

Not quite shaking but close.

They went into a car park so I reported to 101 with the number plate. Hopefully the car park may have cctv to catch them getting in/out of the car? Does anyone know if the police will even try?

Rant away, fucking idiots. To be so cavalier with the baby is appalling.

Jovacknockowitch · 21/03/2024 16:00

Our local Police wouldn't.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 21/03/2024 16:03

You will, 100% guaranteed get some numpty or ten insisting YABVU because you don't know the events that led to this, you are only seeing a snap shot of their lives blah blah blah.

I absolutely agree with you. Fucking stupidity of the highest order

Oh I’m prepared for the apologists 😏

Thinking about it I wish I’d done a FB live video and posted it all over SM.

The car also had all manner of vision-obscuring crap along the parcel shelf including - I swear I’m not making this up - a large terracotta plant pot. So a nice extra missile in the event of a crash.

Fuckwits, I totally agree with you

OneTC · 21/03/2024 16:11

Without a video the police probably won't do anything but you can hope.

AmeliaEarhart · 21/03/2024 16:18

Oooh, then you definitely would have got lots of comments calling you a “grass” and telling you to mind your own business, because apparently cars are just extensions of people’s homes and they can do what they like in them 🙄

Good on you for reporting.

GalileoHumpkins · 21/03/2024 16:37

I think reporting it to the police was enough, you must know you'd be setting them up for a whole load of harassment and threats if you'd posted it on FB or is that what you'd be hoping for?
I'm not condoning their stupid behaviour but I'm glad you didn't compound it with your own.

SlackAlice1 · 21/03/2024 16:38

I’m tempted to post on the local community FB group with the details and number plate in the hope someone who knows him sees it. Maybe if he knows people notice he’ll think twice?

And it might make him hesitate next time he fancies texting while
driving, and popping a baby on his partners lap?

I wouldn't publicly shame someone unless you're 100% certain they've done something wrong.

It's not likely, but it could have been a short emergency journey in which it would be legal to travel without a car seat. With that as a possibility, no I wouldn't plaster their details all over the internet.

Damnloginpopup · 21/03/2024 16:41

About time somebody FUMMED again.

YouDidntEvenAskIfSheWasThereMoriarty · 21/03/2024 16:41

Ah just noticed the texting. Yes, no excuse for that.

I wouldn't mention the baby though.

An emergency journey that involves parking in a pay and display car park in the middle of town?

Come ON.

There's no need to be rude. How am I supposed to know where this car park was? I wasn't there!

Unless it's the car park to a cinema or something, you can't exclude the possibility that it was an emergency. So no, you can't go around publicly accusing people of committing crimes without the absolute certainty that they've done something wrong.

If this was a legal case, those are the questions anyone would be asking before convicting someone. You can't just make assumptions.

SherrieElmer · 21/03/2024 17:00

Both of them are disgusting pieces of human flesh with no brains.

Point taken re:the car park. Apologies - I didn’t specify.

If it had been a hospital car park I might have given them the benefit of the doubt.

There is NO EXCUSE on earth for having a little one on your lap. None whatsoever. The smallest of impacts could lead to a head smashing on the dashboard.

benjoin · 21/03/2024 17:02

If they have a unit nearby doing not a lot then yeah they'll ask them to keep a look out

WhateverMate · 21/03/2024 17:06

No the police won't try I'm afraid.

They just don't have enough officers to be able to send one to look at the CCTV, trace them through their reg plate, and then go round and knock on their door/take action.

You'd be lucky if they could spare an officer to attend if your house got burgled.

Causewerethespecialtwo · 21/03/2024 17:07

I doubt the police will do anything unfortunately. I witnessed a car drive up onto the pavement, narrowly missed padestrians and then smashed into a traffic light, sending it off at an angle. It reversed back and drove off as if nothing had happened! My son had taken a quick video as it reversed and drove off and we got the reg plate. I called the police and they couldn’t have been less interested. Weren’t bothered since no-one had been hit. Didn’t come to the scene, didn’t want my video. The traffic light was at a 45 degree angle for weeks with bits of smashed up car lying around it. 🤷🏼‍♀️

SerenChocolateMuncher · 21/03/2024 17:09

You are unreasonable to think the Police will be the slightest bit interested.

Abhannmor · 21/03/2024 17:18

Well done you are 100% right. There needs to be more severe penalties for this dangerous selfish idiocy!

RhubarbAndFlustered · 21/03/2024 17:28

I've seen the same with my MIL's neighbours. Two adult daughters who never bothered with seatbelts for their children. Oh how I wished those stupid girls would get caught one day. Reporting didn't work because it was a small village and no police force close enough to be there in time and no obvious travelling pattern to even guess likely times/days to get them.
One time I watched one throw the infant carrier in the empty back seat and get in the front with her two day old in her arms on one of the coldest, iciest days. Most people were staying in because the roads were a solid block of ice but no, not these idiots. It gave me the rage knowing the likelihood of her BF crashing and an airbag popping that poor newborn like an acne spot was even higher than usual!

SlackAlice1 · 21/03/2024 17:35

@RhubarbAndFlustered OMG! 😕😡
