Being asked by work to email my passport

Just this, really and has anybody had similar issue with work asking for passport screenshot to be sent either by email ( not secure) or via WhatsApp.

They do have a secure upload link which they sent me, I uploaded my passport and sent it off.Was informed by the app it was successfully uploaded. But work is saying they didn’t get it and asking for it via other method.

For context, I work for an agency, recently got a new passport and previous to that they were content with my drivers licence ( sent via WhatsApp !)

I feel a bit vulnerable just sending over my personal info like that, especially since they don’t appear to be receiving it once sent !

Is this the norm these days as they seem very blasé about it a if it’s no big deal .

Anyone had similar and what did you do? / What would you do ? AIBU to think this isn’t right ?

Why have they asked for it - is it to prove right to work?

Unfortunately it has become pretty standard now due the government abolishing enforcement and putting the onus on employers to do their immigration enforcement.

Any chance you could go in with it and show them physically ?

I won't post my passport off if it was me

I have given in and just emailed a picture of my passport.

hannsmum · 21/03/2024 13:39

Sorry just saw email

You are correct that they are blase about it and I highly doubt they take any care of our personal data at all.

It is a legitimate request but first of all I would call and speak to someone to check that the request is genuine. It seems strange you have uploaded it to the secure site but they can't see it. Verify in person or by phone call that it is genuine and then see what they suggest. Either offer to present your passport in person or try the uploader again and send them the confirmation that you have done so.

Unfortunately no I can’t take it. Their office is other end of country and some of their staff work from abroad too.
They say for compliance they need an up to date passport. They had my old one but it expired and I didn’t renew for some time. I shouldn’t have key on about the renewal but I think that’s beside the point.

Thanks for your replies. Just needed a rant too, I suppose because I’m concerned about potential ID theft too.
I’ve sent it via the verification link again and see what happens.

I wouldn't see it as a big deal either and just email a photo in.
