To wonder if this means I’ve been offered the property

I’ve been on the council wait list for 8 years. A row of new builds in a lovely came up and I was quite far down the list but I’ve been called as no one else as the local connection. A housing officer is going to visit me tomorrow at home and go through a few things and then let me view and sign me up on Thursday. I’ve always been took off bidding for anything else. Does this mean I am in with a good chance?

What is your AIBU question?

Pixiesgirl · 19/03/2024 15:58

Sounds promising, hope you get it.

Pixiesgirl · 19/03/2024 16:02

I have only ever been phoned when I have been offered a property.

What is your AIBU question?

It's right there in the title

Sounds like it op

nadine90 · 19/03/2024 16:07

I can’t speak for other HAs but where I live, if you are offered a viewing, you are offered the property once you’ve viewed it. Fingers crossed for you op x

whatthehellnow23 · 19/03/2024 16:24

Sign up is a definite yes if you decide to accept it :) (I work in social housing ) congrats and I hope you love it!

Fusciaflower · 20/03/2024 00:29

Thank you all

@whatthehellnow23 please could I ask what happens if I accept the house and how soon would somebody usually get the keys after signing the paper work? Would I then have to pay the months rent upfront? It didn’t say on this particular listing. I have a move out date in mid April for my current private rented house. Thank you :)

Very lucky, your neighbours in the part that are not social housing will be paying a fortune

PoundlandColumbo · 20/03/2024 00:50

Sounds very promising OP, tentative congratulations. Its nice to hear a success story.

You'll probably get some negative posts (the one above has a whiff of sour grapes)... take no notice.

Yawn. You don’t know anything about the OP’s circumstances. She could have been private renting for 10 years and she’s finally got a property. She may be homeless. She may be overcrowded and has finally got a bigger place. What the hell is your problem?

UpsideLeft · 20/03/2024 00:59

Fingers crossed for you

In Sheffield they give you the keys when you sign, usually at the viewing.

UpsideLeft · 20/03/2024 01:18

From what you say it's pretty much in the bag

I wish social housing was easier for people to get so they just carry on with their lives as normal and that there was rent control of landlords like other European countries

Wwydh · 20/03/2024 02:04

Fingers crossed for you 🤞

Yes, my mum was very lucky to be leaving the care system on her 18th birthday, with 11 day old me with no family to speak of and getting help with social housing.
She was very lucky indeed.

Menora · 20/03/2024 06:46

Yes I had to sign up straight away at the viewing and then I ended up paying 2 rents as it overlapped with my private rent notice period however I applied to the council for a discretionary housing allowance for some of the rent to help me and they actually did pay some of my rent. I applied that I needed to take the property as offered but couldn’t afford 2 rents up front. Check your local authority rules.
I then had more time to move in slowly as I had 2 homes for a few weeks
I gave the private rent back early after contacting the landlord and they rented it out quickly

my HA rent is massive it’s not cheap. Please don’t think it’s cheap for HA! It’s just below market rent and I was a single parent on a lower income. Council housing is cheaper per week than HA housing but it was the same cost as me private renting but provided assured tenancy. I was afraid of my old LL and my house was falling apart. He was a horrible man and I waited 10 years to get out of private renting because the LL’s are pretty much always stressful. The housing association are no hassle and leave you alone

if you own your home with a mortgage I am not sure why anyone would be jealous of social housing. I don’t own my house I can’t make equity on it or leave it to anyone in my will. I also don’t bother remodelling it because I don’t own it.

Tumbleweed101 · 20/03/2024 06:54

It sounds likely if they have offered you a viewing based on local connection. We got our village one based on that.

Good luck, I hope you like it when you see it. It’s so exciting getting a place that could potentially be your forever home after private renting.

You will usually be asked to pay a month in advance but not a deposit. At least that’s how it was when I moved into mine.

I also don’t bother

that’ll be the key

why bother when you haven’t paid £££ for it i

I’m not about to fit a new kitchen am I? I don’t own it. Doesn’t mean I don’t keep it nice clean and tidy. I have rules to abide by. I pay plenty of rent, well over £1000pm. I know people like you think we all have houses to live in for £2.50 a week but that’s not the case.

Everythingtoseehere · 20/03/2024 18:27

The issue is the don’t bother mentality
so sick of paying a shit high mortgage and watching the area in my cul de sac going downhill because of the people who don’t bother cos they’re not invested- and why would they be? They’ve no stake in it
dont bother with litter I don’t own it
dont bother with bins overflow I don’t own the place
dont bother where I park I don’t own it
not everyone is like it
some are
it affects people

who pissed on your chips?

Nothing like the superiority of a mortgaged owner over a SH tenant.

You are not better than me, stop acting like you are!

Why do you think you’re better than people because you have a mortgage?

i hope all goes well for you OP and you will be moving into your new house next month x
