Simple explanation why we need LBTQ pride in small town

I live in small rural town, it’s lovely.
Someone is arranging a LBTQ celebration. I support this.

A few people have said the standard but why does it need to be celebrated if it’s just normal it’s drawing attention to the difference blah blah.

I think it’s probably small mindedness but not actually intended. I hear the usual I’ve got a gay friend type comments.

Im straight and just feel im not in the shoes of LBTQ community and have little idea of the problems they have and will support but how do I explain to naïve people the importance of such events in little towns.
In simple terms. Not to argue I don’t think it’s malicious but more of a lack of understanding.

I don’t think that it is your responsibility to do the explaining, is it? A simple” why shouldn’t there be/I think it is a good idea” is enough surely?

Caveat - it also depends on the type of Pride event. Full on Gimp masks and sex toys wouldn’t get my support in a small community where children are unlikely to be able to avoid it. But

No I don’t for a moment think it’ll be fettish and gimps masks, more wear a bright T-shirt and rainbow parade type with a band or two.

Yeah, but these things have to be totally inclusive now don’t they? Cant have any kind of kink shaming or anything like that. Try refusing the furries and kinksters and see how fast the thing collapses.

Because it isn't about LGB its only about T and Q.
