To ask how to clean inside radiators?

we bought this house 2 yrs ago. Didn’t bother cleaning the radiators ever. They look rather dirty. How do you all clean them?

We have a long duster thing like this

If you can’t find the long wand dusters, just tie a piece of rag on string, & pull up through each channel, takes time but does same job

catin8oots · 17/03/2024 16:23

I put a washing up bowl and towels underneath them then pour hot water straight from the kettle

Rumbunctious · 17/03/2024 16:27

I do the same as @catin8oots I put a rectangular washing up bowl underneath then pour hot water down inside of the radiator and into the basin. I add a floral disinfectant to the water and scrub with a long wand radiator scrubber - it smells lovely when the radiator heats up.

Hairdryer at the top, hoover pipe at the bottom.

UraniumArthur · 17/03/2024 16:33

If you are careful and there are two of you and the radiators are small, you can just lift them off the wall long enough to wipe down behind them.

HesterPrincess · 17/03/2024 16:39

Hairdryer above and the hoover nozzle underneath. Works brilliantly.

mind is blown by the idea of cleaning radiators

The older types can get very dirty.
My mind is blown by the idea of just lifting them off the wall!

I've been in my house for 21 years and had never cleaned behind the radiators. I bought one of those long wand brushes recently and amused myself pushing out vast quantities of dust.

This is how we've painted behind all the smaller ones: one lifts and the other quickly rollers behind - much easier than taping them up or trying to do it with a long/small roller.

You obviously don't want to bend or strain the pipework excessively - so you just lift slightly up and away from the wall. Just enough to get your hand down behind it.

Pigeonqueen · 17/03/2024 17:56

Lived in my house for 15 years and never cleaned a radiator beyond a light dusting of the tops and the bottom!

catin8oots · 23/03/2024 14:12

I think if you haven't got dogs it's less of an issue.

AutumnLea · 23/03/2024 14:43

Ours get a lot of cat hair trapped under the grill at the top so I take it off to clean like this

SkyBloo · 23/03/2024 14:47

Never cleaned a radiator in my life

Except a proper system flush of inside the pipes.

Mrsjayy · 23/03/2024 15:06

I just take the grill off and hoover it !
