YABU = I should go
YANBU = I should not go

I have been invited to a 2-day meeting next week with the senior leadership team in my chain of command. There’s around a dozen people going. Plus a meal in the evening that you’re expected to go to.

I have to travel across the country and stay overnight for this meeting. I have also traveled to see the same people just last week. I have also been travelling every week this year for work (not in my contract to do this) so generally feel tired.

I had a run-in with my manager recently and could do without the drama of needing to see him face to face when we usually just interact on Teams. I raised concerns with him, and he’s been gaslighting me ever since. So I applied for a promotion and have a job interview on 26th, and frankly could do without the faff of travel and keeping up appearances to focus on my interview! No one else that my manager manages can attend either, so I won’t be the only one.

the positive to going would be not letting my manager colour my reputation eg showing people how professional and competent I am instead of him making something up in my absence.

I'd go but nobody really knows apart from you

blCkmagic · 17/03/2024 16:09

I guess it’s a toss up of whether I want to prioritise the job I’m in vs the promotion

Cause I will find this week very draining

Would not going effect the potential for the promotion? Could it look like a lack of commitment if you don't go?

blCkmagic · 17/03/2024 16:13

No, the promotion is in the same company but I have to apply for the job as usual so it wouldn’t have any impact (civil service)

It sounds like an optional meeting and like nine else in your grade is going. Can you make a business case - eg you have work to do at your desk and can’t miss 2 days of work time?

OTOH Are there particular outcomes expected from the meeting that it would be helpful for you to be involved in? Can you take toil for the evening part to help with interview prep?

*no one not nine!

Thanks so much, it’s a good question I can put to my (horrendous) manager tomorrow.

side note - any suggested excuses to miss the meeting? Would be much appreciated 😁
