Toyota Yaris or VW Polo?

Angeldelight21 · 16/03/2024 07:05

Hi everyone, I'm looking to buy a few years old car that I tend to keep for 10 years. I found two cars in my price range but unsure which to go for.

Has anyone have experience owing any of these cars?

TIA

I have had a couple of Polos and MIL has a Yaris. In terms of reliability, Toyota beats WV. A Yaris is more roomy but a Polo is more fun to drive and, in my opinion, looks better, but I am shallow and think how a car looks is important.

My first car was a VW Polo I absolutely loved it, it was comfortable, reliable and felt solid, it also felt like a decent amount of space for a smaller car. It was nippy but it was a 1.6 engine, my mum had it for years after I fell in love with a Beetle, it just kept going until she was hit by a lorry on the motorway, ricocheted into the central reservation and then the lorry hit her again, the fireman attending said to her in a different car she might not have walked away with no injuries in the way she did, but that was years ago, it was an R reg and VWs were built like tanks then.

I've driven a Yaris as a courtesy car and it was fine and Toyotas are meant to be reliable. I don't think you'll go far wrong either way.

Polo! I've had two Polo's now. Both indestructible and I ran them both into the ground. Think my last one did about 200k miles.

I’ve had both and they are both great cars, I’d choose the Yaris though as I’ve found you get more extras for the same price. They are economical, nippy and as I found out, reliable and safe in a crash. Also better in the snow if that’s a consideration for you

Thank you for the replies.

And regards to the maintenance, service or when parts needed does any of these cars is more expensive than the other?

They’re both really common non-premium cars, so you can take them anywhere and get bog standard parts. If you’re a newer driver, check insurance. Polos start in group 2 and Yarises start in group 3. Running costs will be similar.

I’ve had a Yaris for a year now and I love it. It’s a hybrid so the fuel costs are approx half of what I was paying before.

Locutus2000 · 16/03/2024 08:21

Yaris. Bulletproof little things which just go forever.

With a Polo you need to get lucky.

GreatGateauxsby · 16/03/2024 08:23

Toyota beats VE for reliability.
also significantly cheaper to buy.

they are cheaper to insure and on par to run.

yaris every time

Maggie93 · 16/03/2024 08:23

I've got a polo and it's great. Would definitely recommend!

Hollybelle83 · 16/03/2024 08:26

My first car was a Yaris and I loved it. Super reliable and never caused me a single problem.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 16/03/2024 08:36

I work at a small independent garage selling all makes typically 2-8 years old. For us VW fares pretty badly for reliability based on warranty claims we handle, which surprised me. So Toyota for reliability.

From a personal point of view I find Polos very dull to look at and to drive, I love a Yaris. It feels solid, well built and good quality, and I think they look great.

Also, if you have it serviced at Toyota they then warranty it for a year (up to 10 years old or 100k I believe) so that's an absolute no brainer. We service our own cars there so we can sell them with a years Toyota warranty.

Shade17 · 16/03/2024 08:36

Toyota are normally top 3 in any reliability index you look at, VW are lucky to make mid-table these days. Yaris every single time.

kasho5 · 16/03/2024 08:37

We've had both - definitely Polo. Much better car

Newbalancebeam · 16/03/2024 08:38

I’ve had a few Polos over the years. The newer ones have been beset with electrical issues. I think VWs have gone downhill over the last decade. Toyota or Hyundai going forward. Reliable and decent warranties.

MrsMoastyToasty · 16/03/2024 08:39

DH is driving a 19 year old Polo. 130k miles on the clock and still copes with his 50 mile round commute.
