To think Boots perfume staff must be working on commission?

I visited my local large Boots store this afternoon to have a browse of the perfumes to treat myself, and it felt like I’d stuck a fresh leg of lamb in a piranha tank. The staff were standing in a group by the cabinets watching my every move, which also made it hard to look at the range without being right next to a staff member, and any time I made the mistake of lingering by a certain brand one of them popped up beside me to ask if I needed help. I actually lost count of the number of times I was approached. There are no longer any tester strips on the displays, I was told to ask staff if I wanted a fresh one but when I did so it felt really pressured, the staff member would start listing the bottle sizes and ask which one I was interested in so they could get it out for me. One staff member asked if I needed help and I said I was just browsing, a few minutes later I caught her eye again and she said in quite an abrupt tone “You look lost are you sure you don’t need anything??”

I used to love a good long browse and sniff session in Boots but I couldn’t wait to get away today. I almost left with nothing but really needed a new perfume so I stuck it out, as soon as I turned round to ask someone to get it out the cabinet there were two staff members who rushed toward me at the same time. It has really put me off going back.

Anyone else had the same experience, or knows what the reason is for the double glazing sales tactics??

They don't want you to knick it

It’s all locked in cabinets though!

I wanted to buy some that was in the locked cabinet and couldn't get the attention of a sales assistant for love nor money!

It's so annoying for those very reasons. I miss Debenhams so much.

LordBummenbachsMagnificentBalls · 15/03/2024 20:25

Debenhams was great, I guess I’ll have to stick to online ordering from now on. It’s a shame as it’s nice to be able to have a chance to smell them first

The perfume shop are pretty good .offer 2 or 3 smells .I think that boots are struggling for sales is all

Flatleak · 15/03/2024 21:00

How do you browse and sniff if it's locked away?!

They have some (practically nailed down) testers.

This was me the last time I went in. Not a soul to be found anywhere despite being a city centre store. I gave up after spending about 15 minutes looking for anyone who worked there.

You can’t now but they never used to be locked up.

They’re still not in places like House of Fraser or H Beauty, though I was pounced on there too!

I know what you mean OP, it’s a nightmare for me as I’m normally on a mobility scooter so usually have to stop rather than casually keep on walking!!

RosesAndHellebores · 15/03/2024 21:06

This is why I so miss our House of Fraser. The staff in Boots are pretty helpful though but they recognise me and know I buy stuff occasionally.

Katemax82 · 15/03/2024 23:29

What did you get in the end?

JMSA · 16/03/2024 00:33

This isn't my experience in Boots.

Bloody Shop lifters are to blame. America everything is chained up! I blame Biden, people aren’t being prosecuted under $200 😩looters are just walking in with training bags & filling up with cheap stuff as well as high end merchandise.

What would Biden have to do with a state law?

hulahooper2 · 09/05/2024 22:18

My dd was a boots perfume assistant They had thousands of pounds worth stolen each week and got rid of security guards .

because He’s the head of the USA- if you are asking that, maybe you need to educate & read up

AnotherCrazyOldCatLady · 11/05/2024 11:40

Boots have gone to the dogs I'm afraid. Their website is shit, their staff rude and incompetent. They gave me the wrong prescription this week and couldn't have given less of a fuck.
