Playground etiquette - sitting ON equipment

Took DS to the playground where one of the pieces of equipment is a sunken trampoline. Get there and 3 parents and their children (2-3 year olds approx, same age as DS) are just sitting around it, with their feet ON the trampoline. DS likes the trampoline best but obviously we go on all the other equipment first in the hopes that the people move. After 15 mins they are still there so I go over and ask if DS can go on. They say yes, but don’t move their feet and let their DC stay on. DS didn’t want to go on because it was about 1m x 1m (could have been 1.5 x 1.5 I’m not sure but the point is it’s a small square) and therefore crowded and I didn’t really know what to do.

is this a thing? Have never come across it before - surely you cant just sit ON play equipment/let children hog it.

what do you say to parents who are hogging stuff like that anyway? Wasn’t really sure if it’s fine to ask someone to get off okay equipment like some sort of deranged playground officer 😃
