Going back to the GP today (if we can get in)

Me, 6 months pregnant, and DS(4) are both showing signs of a chest infection. Hot and cold sweats which do come down with paracetomal, extremely tight/heavy feeling in chest, coughing fits, I'm coughing up yellow mucus.

We had what seemed like a 24h bug (just sickness) over the weekend which I think has triggered it and DS has had a cold for about a week before this.

We went to the GP 2 days ago. He briefly checked us over and said its viral we just need to use paracetomal/calpol and drink plenty of water. I felt a bit daft really. I've had covid and this feels worse than I did back then. He didn't do a swab or anything and after some googling (I know probably shouldnt), the symptoms between a bacterial and viral infection are so similar, I feel like he based that because there's a viral bug going round in the area we have a viral chest infection.

Anyway, Poor DS is managing to eat and drink but he's having coughing fits. These are worse at night he coughs and coughs and coughs (I've tried humidfier, vicks, propped pillow etc but obviously if it's an infection this is harder to shift)

Last night I had a panic attack from wheezing and gasping whilst coughing so much. I feel awful and drowsy. BTW I should mention I haven't been to the midwife as I'm still feeling regular movements.

Rang the GP back today and they said they will try squeeze us in and they'll call me back to let me know

I'm sooo tired , does it sound like it could be bacterial and therefore we may need antibiotics? The GP and receptionist are making me feel like I'm wasting their time

Also the GP checked me with a stethoscope to listen to my chest through a t shirt and hoodie I thought it would have to be on bare skin?

This is going round and most people don’t need antibiotics - I didn’t nor did DH.

However if it’s gone to your chest it might be something you need.

I'm just thinking as it's been 2 days since we saw the GP and we started with symptoms Sunday I thought we would be starting to feel better now ☹️

It does sound viral from what you say but none of us can give remote medical advice. Listening to your chest through clothing is fine as long as you're still enough which most adults are.

I think if you're struggling that much in the night, at the very least you need to ask for a salbutamol inhaler to help you breathe overnight. Don't feel guilty going back to the GP, it's what they are there for. Good luck x

Look up the symptoms of Adenovirus - they sound similar to yours

Gastric symptoms, severe cold symptoms and with viral conjunctivitis as an added bonus

There's nothing the doctor will be able to do for you

You're six months pregnant and gasping for air at night and wheezing. Definitely go back to gp and don't listen to others telling you not to! If the gp can't see you try ringing the maternity assessment unit, they might see you but obvs not your child.
