To not have a tracker on DS’s phone?

I presumed I was fairly typical in not tracking my teens phone. Building future trust, learning to communicate and all that jazz… I guess also I would have hated it myself, so that colours my view.

but I’ve discovered every friend he has (age 12-15) does have a tracker on their phone. Is it the norm now and I’m out of touch. He’s the younger than my others and they didn’t have the option as they had non smart phones at his age.

For background he’s 13, a good kid who keeps to contact rules like letting me know when he reaches the tube or when he leaves somewhere. No reported behaviour issues, but he’s confident and has friends. Sometimes he’s alone, more often with others. If I had to check I guess his Oyster card / debit card would tell me if he really was somewhere far from where he said. I have no concerns though that he’s not honest.
