Neighbour smoking weed and our bedroom stinks.

Hi, we bought a house back in December, moved in in January and for the last couple of weeks are bedroom and all of upstairs stinks of cannabis, my dp and I don’t smoke and my children are 4 and 2 so it’s definitely not them.
So it must be the next door neighbours. we are in a terrace so our bedrooms share a wall. I don’t think they own their property but I’m unsure.

What can I do if I report them to the police will it actually do anything other then put me as a “telltale” or do I need to get some decent air fresheners?

No they won't do anything. It's a huge problem for many across the country.

Maybe try and talk to them? Be friendly and polite. They might have no idea and be appalled you can smell it. Do they seem like people you can approach?

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 07/03/2024 08:29

No smell when you viewed?

BobbyBiscuits · 07/03/2024 08:30

No point calling the police. Could you see them smoking out of the bedroom windows, or in the garden beneath your house?
If you see them you could say you don't like the smell around the kids, so could they smoke further away from your house? Maybe towards the other neighbours? (lol) not ideal but you can't exactly demand they stop.
If they are smoking indoors I can't see how the smoke could get through to your house? I guess if it smells really strongly they could be growers.

Maybe they've got a cannabis farm in the loft? Seems odd you can smell it through your bedroom wall

Itscatsallthewaydown · 07/03/2024 08:37

When my neighbour smoked weed in her garden you could smell it throughout our house; it’s really pervasive. She’s stopped now, thank god.

We have this exact problem too
My mental health is shot because of that plus the constant loud bass music
I have a year old and a 4m old

Not at all odd, very very common when you live next door to someone who smokes it.

My neighbours smoke constantly and I can't stand it but in a lot of ways they are ok neighbours so I'm loathe to fall out with them. Not a lot you can do anyway other than appeal to their good nature which I have tried on occasions but eventually it just reverts back to normal.

We had the same problem a while back . Shared one wall. Upstairs had an awful smell of cannabis. We assumed they just smoked it. But we called the police over another incident next door . And they found huge farm covering bedrooms and attic . The police contacted the landlord and they had no clue .
We have very nice neighbours now .

Thank you all for the advice, to be honest I don’t think I can approach them as they aren’t very welcoming and were quite aggressive when I knocked to see if a parcel had been left with them when we first moved in. The smell has only started up the last 3 weeks so we didn’t notice it when viewing the house. I’ve heard them argue over money matters so maybe they’ve found a source of income by growing it.

Absolutely dredful. Some people have no consideration. That stuff stinks. The only way it's acceptable is for medical purposes such as ms. There's not a lot you can do OP. I'd think about possibly papering the walls with a thick washable wallpaper.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 15/05/2024 12:52

I really feel for you OP, we had the same issue with our neighbour who was smoking it everyday with his teenage daughter. The police wouldn’t do anything, the neighbours didn’t care and became abusive after we approached them. We considered selling our house and uprooting our children as I couldn’t stand it anymore. We couldn’t open the windows, DC uniforms smelled of weed and DC2 with ASD and ARFID hated the smell and would have meltdowns. However In the end they moved as he had an affair with his daughter’s friend’s mum. We now have lovely neighbours. I really do hope you get it sorted out.

I am experiencing this problem too. My heart goes out to you did you manage to find a solution? One of my neighbours ended up with an ASBO because I kept on reporting them to police etc, and I heard they are being dealt another ASBO by the housing association for the same thing because people are very angry about the stench of weed invading their homes myself included, especially when they have children it’s absolutely shocking that people brazenly walk the streets nowadays smoking cannabis like it’s nothing. It’s making my life extremely difficult because I have severe asthma I’ve been in and out of hospital because of this lot smoking cigarettes and weed and now two new neighbours moved into the flat above me, and are constantly smoking cigarettes and weed now as well! Whole house stinks! Police will act, I can assure you, it depends who you speak to. Keep calling them and keep reporting these druggies, remember make sure to get an incident number. Don’t give up also get in touch with your local MP this will definitely get the ball rolling. Both you and your family shouldn’t have to put up with anti social behaviour and the smell of their drugs in your house

Lilly3024 · 12/08/2024 04:46

My partner is a police officer and I can assure you that they won’t do anything. It’s people smoking weed in their own home. We have exactly the same issue with our neighbours, DD’s bedroom stinks and so does our bathroom.

Unfortunately I just think it’s one of those things, same with neighbours barking dogs/bonfires/loud music. Some people are just selfish twats.

There’s a brand called Valentte that do really good diffusers for great prices, also oil burners. I stick a wax melt on when they’re smoking and it does help. Sorry to sound “just put up with it” but the fact that they’re unapproachable leaves you quite stuck
