Company car situation

Long story short when I was recruited (and it was in the job advert), I was told I would be provided with a company car(benefit in kind), fast forward a couple months and now I'm told I won't (something to do with the business - basically a delay)... I'm happy to use my personal car and claim the mileage, however aibu to expect a monthly car allowance in addition? In previous job I used to get a monthly car allowance seperate to my wages which really helped towards the costs of it

What's the business mile rate they will pay you?

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 02/03/2024 18:17

Well you could ask but isn't it a different tax rate?

Gizlotsmum · 02/03/2024 18:18

Will you get a company car eventually? I would be cheeky and ask for either a car allowance or a pay increase to cover the benefit that would have been the company car. They might say no but can’t hurt to ask

No car allowance doesn’t have its own tax rate .

Is it in your contract about a company car?

SecretSquare · 02/03/2024 18:36

Is travelling essential to the role or is the car a 'perk'?

KrisAkabusi · 02/03/2024 18:55

If you get a car allowance your mileage rate will go down.

Alwaystransforming · 02/03/2024 18:59

Well it’s part of your package. If I lost my company car I would expect a hefty car allowance or a substantial increase in salary.

khakifingers · 02/03/2024 19:07

Please check with your insurance company that you are covered for business miles. There's no rules about what you should and should not be paid by your employer. The rate set by HMRC is for tax purposes - if you don't get that amount from your employer you can claim tax back from HMRC.

Yes travel is essential for my role.
I said yes I understand I'll have to use my personal car longer then okay then I did ask if I could get car allowance in the meantime. I explained my old company did this aswell as the standard 45p per mile as it helped with other associated costs and they didn't provide me with a car so it covered a bulk of the costs of me financing it... however was told "the 45p per mile covers the fuel plus more... I don't think the company will pay company car allowance"
It just surprised me. If I had no car at all I'm certain they would pay for trains/buses/taxis as they do with other staff who don't drive. So it just didn't sit right with me. I just wanted to see if I am BU expecting a monthly allowance in the meantime

What does your contract or official remuneration offer letter say?

If my contract said company car I would expect it or a cash equivalent.

garagedoor1 · 02/03/2024 20:07

Just checked Contract definitely states: the employee is entitled to a company car
