Worried about Mosquitoes in Majorca in May

Hi

I Wondered if anyone had been to Majorca in early May and what the Mosquito situation is likely to be as looking online it talks about it being very bad but unsure if this applies to all of the island and also this time of year. We are staying in Palma Nova.

I'm Interested to know if need to wear repellant all day and whether you need extra measures in hotel room (ie keep balcony door closed at all times etc).

Any tips/ advice greatly appreciated- also recommendations for repellent for 2 year old .

Thank you 🙂

We go in May half term and it’s not too bad but definitely take insect repellent. I had the worst mozzie bite last year … see pic

Last time we went, lovely evening stroll in the pine forests next to the beach near Pollensa. Next morning the biggest reddest blistering bites. Not one for the rest of tge trip.

Also start taking b12 and eating marmite now. They hate it

We went to Menorca in September, I was bitten to buggery and had nasty reactions. I never usually get bitten wherever we go.
I've since read that loratadine based antihistamine tablets are effective at reducing reaction so I will be dosing up on that before we go away.

Definitely take brewers yeast before you go. We've stayed in Deia (not too bad - cover up in the evening and you'll be ok) and had a day trip to Alcudia (awful - they literally flocked to me and all my bites come up like the poster above's picture as my skin really over-reacts to bites). Interestingly the Majorca mosquitos like me but I got left alone in Menorca while the rest of the family were bitten. They are odd insects.

OP I am also interested in/worried about this! We go for 10 days in early June and I am one of those people the mozzies LOVE for some reason. DP and DS1 never get touched, will be DS2s first hol abroad so hoping he’s the same.

id not heard of the mosquito situation or else I think I would have thought twice about booking.

Bite Away heat pencil is brilliant. It just takes away the itch and reduces the swelling straightaway.
No repellents/creams/candles etc have worked for me.

Been to Majorca lots in May/June and had the occasional bite but not major.

I did stay at a resort in Alcudia and it had a lake that seemed to attract them. We did take spray with us but still got maybe 6 or 7 bites each nothing too crazy. The kids didn't seem to get as many as the adults.

Avon skin so soft oil spray is noted as being a great repellent the original one.

I'm very allergic and have been to Palma Nova in May. No issues at all.

Depends on where you stay in Spain. In a decent resort hotel they spray stuff around the ground and never get bitten much. Yet when I stay in private villas in the exact same local as resorts we get eaten alive!

Best stuff we all use are the refillable Para'Kito bands (Amazon). They work amazingly well. Also check out 'Heat-It' https://just-heat-it.co.uk/products/heat-it - it's a little dongle that fits to the charging plug of your phone and with their app, as soon as you get bit, just use the app and put the dongle end on bite and it uses heat to breakdown the bite. It's really clever! On older bites it stops the itch but on new bites I find they don't even form after one use. It's amazing and was a godsend last year in Spain and the Caribbean!!!

We went to menorca last year in early July and they were brutal. We had the jungle stuff, plug ins, citronella candle etc. we had the bite pen, and bite cream but three of us ended up on antihistamines. I am particularly sensitive to bites and had a massive one that bruised my thigh for weeks.

Think a lot of it is how close you are to standing water.

We went to Peurto Pollensa 2 years ago and I was bitten to death by tiger mosquitos and had really bad reactions. Hotel was really close to a lake.

I found Avon skin so soft worked well last year, only had 1 small bite. Though we were in different hotel and know people say the Avon thing is not science.
