Am I being fooled by this pronunciation?

Luftfahrt22 · 29/02/2024 12:33

I've never seen or heard of Lululemon until I followed a running shoes website and ordered a pair. I told a girl at the gym and she laughed at my pronunciation.

So, AIBU to say it's spelled Lulu Lemon and that's how people must say it?

Or is it Lu-Lu-Le-Mon

Or even Lull Yule Mon?

No idea! DD and I think it's Lu lu lemon....

incognito119 · 29/02/2024 12:41

DD tells me its LuLu Lemon - so Lulu is the first name and lemon is the surname

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 29/02/2024 12:41

On the basis of no knowledge of this brand whatsoever, I'd say Lulu Lemon.

And you would be correct. The gym person is wrong. She might be one of those people who mispronounce Ralph Lauren's name as well. (it's not Lau-REN.)

Thank you! And I didn't know Ralph Lauren was stressed on the first syllable too...you'll be telling me Ralph is pronounced Ralf not Rafe too, I bet!

I can't tell if you're joking or not but yes, it's Ralf. He was American, not poncey British 😂

twingiraffes · 29/02/2024 14:16

I once knew somebody who pronounced Gianni Versace as 'Genie Vair-Sass'.

CarrieHain · 29/02/2024 14:16

What about Titleist? 50% of people when shown the word say tit leist. Which amuses me no end.

ancienticecream · 29/02/2024 14:32

Never heard it pronounced any way other than "Lulu Lemon" 🤷‍♀️

I’ve always wondered. Never had to say it out loud though! How do you pronounce it?!

It's title (as in title of a book) and a short "ist" at the end.

Why is it amusing that people don't know how to pronounce a brand name that they've probably never heard of and would have no reason to ever say out loud?

Are you perchance a golf wanker? 😀

DonnasShrugaleros · 29/02/2024 16:37

The name LuluLemon was picked by the creator as he thought it would be funny trying to hear people from South East Asia pronounce it. Dick.

No not a golfer, I'm not laughing at the people who say it wrongly, I'm laughing at a company chosing such a wanky name.

TammytheFaceGhost · 29/02/2024 18:29

I know how Titleist is pronounced, I (when I very rarely have the opportunity to say it as someone with no interest in golf) take great pleasure in saying TITleist, because I'm immature.

I've never thought there could be an alternative pronunciation of Lululemon! Did the gym person actually say "that's not how you pronounce it"?

Never heard of TitList...maybe my gym person can correct me on that too. It's lovely how the more educated like to help by correcting us.

RuRuRemon?

I myself thought it was pronounced
"Lulu Le Mon". You know, like French.

Either they did it on purpose or were totally clueless. iEther way isn't good!

My mother genuinely thought it was pronounced "Tit Leist".

My Dad was incredulous and said it's "Title ist" you silly moo!

I do think a hyphen would've helped matters.

Title-ist. ✅

Smidge001 · 29/02/2024 20:34

Well I thought it was

  • Lulu le Mon (like the french), and
  • Tight-List.

Shows you how wrong I am! Grin

Tarantella6 · 29/02/2024 20:37

I've never properly noticed how many letters are in Lululemon. I always read it as lulu-mon. Really must pay more attention 😁

LifeExperience · 29/02/2024 20:45

It's Title-ist as in a person who wins a title. They make golf equipment.

Same here until I heard someone refer to the brand recently and it took me a minute before the penny dropped. 🤷🏻‍♀️
