Whole house has been renovated. Walls taken out etc. really dusty .

Do I lay the floor first ( and cover it with dust sheets) and then get it professionally painted ?

or shall I paint first and then do flooring last ? But that will mean the whole house is stays dusty?

Any advice from people who have don’t either ?
Thank you

What are you having on the floor? Personally I’d paint first, floor last.

You do the flooring first, then paint.

Paint first including gloss work then floor last

I would lay floor, then clean right through, and get some of the sticky back plastic floor protection. That way you know there's no dust around to stick to your fresh paint and the floor protection stuff is great.

Clean up the dust
Wash down walls with sugar soap to remove traces of dust.
Paint. . Ceiling first then woodwork, then walls.
Lay flooring.
Furnish.

A professional decorator, old school, full apprentice, now in his 80s recently told me start from the top of a room and work down. After all, how would you feel if you splashed gloss on the flooring and couldn't get it off

laclochette · 25/02/2024 14:42

Paint then floors. Otherwise risk of paint on floors. Walls cleaned down thoroughly before painting of course to remove dust.

Whattobakeiwonder · 25/02/2024 14:43

Agree with above. Paint then floor.

Carpet last but wooden floor or tiling 1st

Arightoldcarryabag · 25/02/2024 14:45

If your husband is wanting to put floors down first he wants his head checking. Never mind to strongly feel that way, which to be honest is just weird.

If it's you that wants the floors down, I understand wanting to get rid of the dust, but learn from others experiences and go with the flooring last as decorating accidents are almost inevitable.

Paint first

Scampuss · 25/02/2024 14:47

Paint first, generally.

But, a compromise could be to do the mist coat and first proper coat, then flooring, then the final coat (which means any scuffs or dings can be dealt with easily).

At the very least, get the mist coat done before flooring as it's the messiest.
