Should pedestrian have right of way or car?

I'll try and be brief - I'm the car. NC because I don't want to be bashed a mean bully car driver that hates pedestrians.

I was pulling out of a side road onto the busier main road. I was turning right. I'm the blue car with red arrow.

I did see two men (yellow) walking up the road but presumed they would use the zebra crossing right behind where my car was (orange)

Just as I was about to turn onto the road they walked in front of my car. One sort of threw up his arms in a 'watch where you are going' jesture.

Was I in the wrong? I'm in Ireland, google tells me "Ireland has a jaywalking law that says that if you are within 50 metres of a pedestrian crossing you must use it to cross." now I actually didn't know that until I googled it. But surely common sense would mean as a pedestrian you shouldn't walk in front of a car about to turn?

As a pedestrian I always walk behind the 1st car waiting at a junction

YABU - Pedestrian was right
YANBU - Pedestrian should walk behind the car

Mixed bag, and I do take on board what people are saying. The road is right by a secondary school, this was outside school time and they were adults not teens.

The dark black is the path from the town.

Green is the school with an island where parents can pull in to park for drop off.

Also added in some black blocks between the road and the zebra crossing - these are big square concrete planter things, to keep the cars going around the island correctly I guess but also block it to lead the pedestrians to the crossing. I know it's normal to take the shortest route so they probably walked over the island and through the planters. There is a correct word for that, like the little paths your see through grass around places instead of using the built path

@TeresaCrowd as a pedestrian that is exactly what I do, I go behind the 1st car and cross there. The junction can be difficult to get out at, and normally that's what people do, go behind the 1st car. Not actually walk out on the main road to go around the car moving into the main road. And thanks, for noticing I did observe them and stop, of course I would never want to hit anyone. Some people are making it out like I was there revving my engine aiming to mow down people!!

Zebra crossings have been springing up everywhere around here the last few years but many people still don't use them.

Anyway, I've go use that road again!

YABU for not putting I'M IN IRELAND WHERE THE UK RULES OF THE ROAD AS DETAILED IN THE HIGHWAY CODE DON'T NECESSARILY APPLY as an image attachment with flashing lights for the MN "I only read the title" crowd.

The UK government decided not to pay for a public awareness campaign so most people don't know this and continue to beep their horns when I say it's my right of way (as the pedestrian).

YABU not to read the highway code

IRELAND 🇮🇪 is a different country and is NOT part of the UK. There is no highway code to read.
@Isthisexpected YABU to not know this, or not read the op to understand this.

Perhaps this on all posts by a poster in Ireland???

Here lies the body
Of William Jay,
Who died maintaining
His right of way.
He was in the right
As he walked along,
But he’s just as dead
As if he’d been wrong.

As a car or a pedestrian you should be checking first and not assuming right of way or anything else.
But the only time I've been in an accident was at traffic lights that weren't working, and I stopped because a pedestrian stepped out in front of me, and the car behind went into my back. It was classed as the car behind's fault.

Would you say that poem to the family of the woman who died in this accident?

Victim blaming horseshit, as usual.

It says right there in the OP that driver is in Ireland.

I think that was the point ditalini was trying to make!

yes I think you might be right 😂 sorry😊

YANBU.

The men were being aggressive with a female driver, showing you who owns the road (hint, not you).

They should have gone behind your car and used the pedestrian crossing. But my guess is that that approach lacked the attraction of getting a rise out of a female driver and would have made them feel inferior to you.

Everyone using a road has a responsibility to use it safely.

nurserycarrun · 22/02/2024 19:18

So this evening about 20 teenagers (must have been something on late in school) crossed the road while I was waiting to go onto the main road. Not 1 of them walked around the car in front, they all walked behind the front car.

@mathanxiety he did give me a smarmy grin sort of look as well which I think is why this stuck in my mind. I've had people run across the road in front of me, had people absently walk out in front of me, cars pull out without warning etc. As a pedestrian I once grabbed someone who staring at their phone nearly walked out in front of a bus! I think that's why I've posted and that's why it bothered me.

Anyway, I'm going to park it 😏legally I don't know who would have been wrong, morally if I had kept going after realising they were going to walk in front of me would have been abhorrent, common sense though I think they should have walked behind my car which was moving at the time. As a pedestrian with a desire to live that's what I'd do.

I was always told it by my mum as:

This is the story of Daniel Day who died defending his ROW
His rights were clear, his will was strong
and he's just as dead as if he'd been wrong.

(Clearly wouldn't be telling it to someone who'd had an accident or a bereaved family but then you never suggested one might either)

There are some men that just love to have a go at a woman, no-one was hurt and you obviously saw them, it's very weird to cross infront of a car turning right at a junction. Not that long ago I was turning into a side road, there was a man crossing but he was most of the way across when I pulled into the road very slowly/crawl and he went crazy at me shouting and telling me to read the highway code. There was no need! Don't worry
