To consider holiday at 29-30 weeks pregnant?

FirstTimeMum897 · 19/02/2024 18:21

I am 14 weeks pregnant. I feel fine, healthy pregnancy so far, I'm a normal BMI, still exercising (or more correctly, have started exercising again after the nausea at 6-10 weeks kicked my butt).

The only opportunity for a holiday for me and DH together (1 week) is when I will be 29-30 weeks.

4 hr flight. Some walking around a city, a 1 hr drive and a few days in the country side. Not a hot weather destination. I have checked the airline T&Cs, I can fly then and dr said I will probably be OK.

Am I mad to consider it? Will I be huge and uncomfortable? This is my first so don't know what to expect.

Where are you considering?
And with which airline?

I’m going to Amsterdam 33 weeks pregnant. I’m not your gal 😂

I think you should do what you feel comfortable with. Plenty of women work stressful jobs, walking lots and on their feet lots at that week. Just make sure you wear compression socks and walk round the plane plenty!

Merryoldgoat · 19/02/2024 18:33

The truth is you don’t know so it’s a risk.

My pregnancy was absolutely textbook until 28 weeks when I developed SPD and needed crutches, and then at 30 weeks got high blood pressure and needed monitoring.

Personally I wouldn’t.

Flew back for my brother's wedding at 32 weeks. Went longhaul to the seychelles at 38 weeks - swimming and cyling everyday with no problems. Everyone's pregnancy is different - if you feel good - go for it!

FirstTimeMum897 · 19/02/2024 18:38

@professionalnomad you flew at 38 weeks, you mean 28 weeks? I can't even see a single airline that allows you to fly past 36 weeks?

Maybe I should have added, I live in a very expensive holiday destination myself, which means flights are incredibly expensive any less than 3 months ahead. If we book now, the flights are $350. If we leave it, they'll soon be over $1,000 so I need to decide if I should take a chance on the flights.

I went to NewYork for five days when I was 28-29 weeks. It was fine. Everyone is different, you won't. Know how you'll be, but it's not mad to consider it at all. Just book insurance as soon as you book travel and double-check it covers pregnancy.

ancienticecream · 19/02/2024 18:42

We're going to the Canary Islands when I'm 30-31 weeks pregnant 😆 as long as your pregnancy goes smoothly then it'll be fine.

Pomegranatemum · 19/02/2024 18:44

You might be huge and uncomfortable by then or you might not. I don’t think you’re mad to consider it though. I completely understand you wanting to go away.
What would happen if nearer the time you decide it’s not feasible (or the matter is taken out of your hands e.g. for medical reasons?). Would travel insurance reimburse you or would you be willing to write off the costs?
Have you considered somewhere closer and/or where you can just laze around and relax if that’s all you can manage when the time comes?

Boomer1964 · 19/02/2024 18:44

Personally I wouldn't commit and just book something closer to home nearer the time.

weebarra · 19/02/2024 18:44

I went to Mallorca when 34 weeks with both DS2 and DD (their birthdays are 3 years and 2 days apart). It was fine, I don't remember any issues. I did get a fit to fly letter and was asked for it.

Holdmysunhat · 19/02/2024 18:45

I’m 29 weeks pregnant now and would love a holiday right now! Long haul would be fine as my favourite hobby right now is sleeping. My third trimesters are always fine - I’m just rubbish at the first trimester. Pregnancies can vary hugely though so get good insurance!

FirstTimeMum897 · 19/02/2024 18:50

@Pomegranatemum I live on an island, there isn't anywhere closer 😂I'm desperate to go somewhere, anywhere, before I'm stuck here for another minimum of 6-9 months. I guess if I am just uncomfortable, rather than actually sick, insurance won't pay out and we'll have to write off the cost.

I went to to Iceland when I was 6 months pregnant, I was quite big at that point (bump measured 7 weeks ahead size wise the whole pregnancy) but we did all the adventuring you could dream of and had no problems. Only issue was needing to use literally every single toilet I ever came across as my bladder was very thoroughly squished at that point! Loved every minute, just have to pace yourself and listen to your body I think.

BlackThumb · 19/02/2024 18:58

I have just today booked a Greek island for when I’m 30 weeks, currently 14 weeks with first baby, so no idea how I’ll feel.

I’m only going to one place rather than travelling around like I would have before, and have made sure there is aircon as I’m always hot even when I’m not pregnant.

I’m just going to give it a go. It’s not a crazy amount of money if I couldn’t go and insurance didn’t pay out.

Like you say it might be last chance for a while!

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 19/02/2024 19:10

I went on holiday at 31 weeks. As long as your pregnancy is going alright it will be fine. Just don’t plan to make it too hectic when there.

Lancrelady80 · 19/02/2024 19:16

Personally I wouldn't, not with flights involved. Dd was born at 29wks very unexpectedly though, bringing with it a stint in NICU until her due date. So I am perhaps extra wary!

If you do decide to go, make sure you are covered up to hilt with insurance in case of a similar situation. It was stressful enough at our local hospital and under NHS, I can't begin to think how we would have coped had we been abroad.

Anothnamechang · 19/02/2024 19:20

As someone whose pregnancy was textbook and had a holiday booked for my birthday whilst pregnant please don’t. I didn’t make my holiday and unexpectedly gave birth at 29 weeks, the day I was supposed to fly out!

I used to never consider it until that one appointment turned sinister and an emergency delivery followed.

AppleTree16 · 19/02/2024 19:20

I went to the south of France 31/32 weeks with my first. It was delightful. Lots of lounging around in a bikini and eating amazing food.

NotFastButFurious · 19/02/2024 19:24

I’m not typically risk adverse but i know 2 people who had text book pregnancies until they suddenly gave birth at 30 weeks!
