Can't buy alcohol at supermarket

Loulou599 · 19/02/2024 12:45

The other day I discovered that in the 3 supermarkets on the main street of a city centre it was impossible to buy alcohol anywhere! I thought I was going crazy at first. Why do they do this, is it because of anti social behaviour? So annoying

i’ve not seen this anywhere- and our town is no stranger to anti social behaviour- are we talking big supermarkets like tesco sainsbury’s etc?

Needmorelego · 19/02/2024 12:50

My local Iceland doesn't because the building is owned by the Methodist church. They also don't open Sundays. It must be in the terms of their lease.
Unusual for all your local shops not too.
You don't live in Bourneville do you? Isn't it a "dry" suburb?

Flickersy · 19/02/2024 12:52

When you say "impossible" do you mean they didn't have any, or they wouldn't sell it to you?

Or is it time-restricted.

Psychoticbreak · 19/02/2024 12:54

Are you in Australia?

ApolloandDaphne · 19/02/2024 12:55

Where was this? Before 10am in Scotland you can't buy alcohol.

Loulou599 · 19/02/2024 12:58

In UK, at a normal time! There wasn't any at all. I've seen this around train stations in some major cities on the continent which is why I'm wondering if its related to anti social behaviour

Where are you?

glasgow, yes weird.

Saudi Arabia, no not strange

Needmorelego · 19/02/2024 13:05

Was it all behind the counter and you had to ask?
Shoplifters and all that.
(I went in a Tesco Metro earlier and there was massive security tags on the Quakers Microwave Porridge)

PutMyFootIn · 19/02/2024 13:06

|You must live in a really rough area with lots of alcohol related problems.

You in NI/England/Wales/Scotland??

EggbertHeartsTina · 19/02/2024 13:08

Brighton? There are a couple of supermarket branches in the centre that don't sell it. Someone mentioned to me they lost their license due to selling to underage people. But I don't know if that is true.

Where in the UK?

what city?

theemmadilemma · 19/02/2024 13:23

I know you can't buy alcohol in Bournville but I thought you could in most other places in the UK!

Ponoka7 · 19/02/2024 13:26

Tesco owns a lot of land and they lease it out on the basis that alcohol licences aren't given. Even if they don't own the land, they blackmail councils. Our local M&S threatened to not renew their lease, so a concession was given by Tesco. The police can block alcohol sales as well.

LakeTiticaca · 19/02/2024 14:40

Is it a big football town? Local Derby with trouble expected?
This happens in my town sometimes, alcohol sales are restricted

whynotwhatknot · 19/02/2024 14:48

depends were you live-altugh my town is roug they still sell alcool in the supermarkets in the centre

AlexaPlaySomeHappyHardcore · 19/02/2024 14:53

Shops can lose their alcohol license for selling to underage people and the local council can deny them a license at all if there are concerns about antisocial behaviour in the immediate area. Some stores have a policy to not sell alcohol before a certain time like say 11am.
