To wonder when obliged became obligated

I know language changes but I'm curious as to how the verb became more unwieldy.

It's an Americanism isn't it? A lot of our language is changing because we can access the whole globe from our pockets. The other thing that is changing is our accents with some regional accents now being endangered.
