To think some people look better as they age

So I recently looked at a photo of me last year and I looked tired, haggard and older than I do this year - I have a 2 and 5year old but I cant believe how much better I look this year, I am 34, has anybody else found this?

I was going to say no, but then remembered that I thought I actually looked my best ever late 30s to 40.

SameSameButDeliverance · 18/02/2024 13:50

Yup. Me. I get checked out, told I’m pretty far more in my 50s than I ever did in my 30s. Confidence, knowing what suits you and, to a degree, money goes a very long way.

If you’re a man, yes.

If you’re a woman, very rarely.

Women absolutely look better as they age!

I think that may be a touch of wishful thinking, unfortunately. But I wish it wasn’t!

I had braces twice (wisdom teeth grew in and forward - undid all of the work of the first) so there as a period in my mid-late 20's I can't help but see wonky and protruding teeth in my photo's from those years. I also am back to the weight I was around then now, with straight teeth, so for different reasons I have had "phases" of being unhappier with my appearance in younger years than I am now.

HornyHornersPinkyWinky · 03/03/2024 19:28

I think many of us find our stride in our 30's in terms of what suits us clothing wise and gain a lot of confidence.
And also tend to have more money to spend on haircuts, treatments etc. I certainly take better care of myself than I did at 21, and some of my fashion choices back then were hideous. I'm nearly 40 and I look and feel way better than I did back then.

Not sure how menopause is going to fuck that all up in the next 10 - 15 years 😱

ThePerfectDog · 03/03/2024 19:32

Absolutely some people (including women) look better as they age.

The women I know who are on the other side of parenting are glowing. Most are 40+.

Time, money, confidence and rest work wonders 🤷🏽‍♀️.

I think my face has slimmed as I’ve aged, which in my case is a good thing (chubby face but good bone structure under it)
sadly the same can’t be said for my belly

Sadly I agree, I wish I didn't. There are plenty of women who look good as they age though.

LivelyLemonDuck · 03/03/2024 19:53

I think women generally look far better with age than men because we invest in our health and appearance more. However, in 30s and 40s when most of us have small kids we women look a bit worse than men of the same age.

Men breeze through this period as they generally do a lot less at home than women and of course they haven't physically gone through pregnancy and childbirth. If we compare men and women 50 and over, women generally look better by miles.

LivelyLemonDuck · 03/03/2024 19:54

In your case op its probably you are sleeping more so can look after yourself better. It's not that YOU are older, it's that your children are older therefore a bit less demanding and can have more time for yourself.

Carsarelife · 03/03/2024 19:56

Very early 40's was my peak time. 52 now and not as vibrant looking and have gained a stone due to menopause stages

daliesque · 03/03/2024 19:59

Yes I do. I have accepted my flawed, overweight body and dress better because I'm not, trying to hide bits. I've got a better hairstyle now I've realised that I don't need to have long hair. I also wear make up more and am willing to spend more money on it and good skin care (though still use Nivea soft as a moisturiser).

I look at photos of me taken in my 30's ans 40's and I look tired and frumpy. Also not as fat as I thought I was then. A recent photo,of me is my favourite - I look still, fat, but more shapely, happier and more stylish and more edgy and nit afraid to wear those slim cut trousers. Yes, I like the way I look in my 50's.

DuskyEvenings · 03/03/2024 20:01

Yes I do. Look better now in my early forties than I've ever done. Combination of confidence, children older, better clothes and make up (not more expensive, just what suits) and I've lost weight.

mizu · 03/03/2024 20:02

Totally agree with @LivelyLemonDuck I've just turned 51 and think I look better than I did in my 30s and 40s, mainly because I feel better - DDs both late teens - because I sleep 😁.

Whattodowithit88 · 03/03/2024 20:14

It’s not that women don’t age well, it’s that men don’t adapt to beauty. For instance when I was young 20’s I found young 20’s men very attractive, now I’m late thirties, I look at young 20’s and think they look like children, too young and i couldn’t sleep with someone that young, they are not attractive to me.
Men always find young women attractive as their tastes don’t seem to adapt like women’s do.

I know what I’m trying to say even though I’m not getting my point across well! lol.

JamSandle · 03/03/2024 20:20

Yes - I think a lot of women look loads better in there 30s-40s for example.

I know what you're saying - men's tastes seem to freeze. I don't think day to day men look better than women regardless of age. I often think the opposite.

Sausage77 · 03/03/2024 21:42

I know loads of 40+ women who genuinely look really attractive (esp the ones with money) but very few 40+ men I’d look twice at. I guess women tend to put far more time and money into preserving their looks than men!

Sideorderofchips · 03/03/2024 21:53

I look far better and comfortable in myself at 39 than I ever have before
