Neighbour knock our hedges down whilst taking garage down

we live in detached house which is surrounded with beech hedging
Next door neighbour has been taking his garage down to make way for extension
He isn’t the best at diy as he just goes straight in and deals with consequences later !

So the big skip is next to hedge and he’s put that much in it and lent the old garage door on it

Dp went out today and the hedges are all bent and leaning. He spoke to him and neighbour said
” I’ll pay for a fence “ No knocking on the door to explain what’s happened or apologise
Dp said to him “ I’ve been cutting them for 20 yrs “
He just thinks he can do what he wants

2 year back when they moved in , day next day he hacked his wall down in the front so he could get his van and Range Rover on garden. Which used from our boundary to virtually the corner of the street ie so nobody parked there because they saw he needed access to his car & van
No dropped kerb
So there’s a tiny space left before our gate and people have been squeezing their car there which sometimes encroaches our drive, so we have limited view out if the drive and have to go in at an angle !

Dp gone out to him, dp is one for keeping the peace, so I’m staying in as I think I’ll say too much

Who owns the hedge, or is it shared? TBH I’d not want to have to cut a hedge, I’d prefer a fence.

I'd contact the council about his "driveway". They are bound to be interested if he is driving over the pavement.

A fence is probably a good idea if he agrees to allow it to support your hedges. I've seen weak hedges wired to fence posts to keep them upright. It would be a shame to lose beech hedges if he's killing them.

Well he shouldn’t be damaging your hedges. I didn’t understand the second bit though about him taking his garden wall down and how that effects you, I keep reading the sentence below and just cannot make any sense of it. Confused

Which used from our boundary to virtually the corner of the street
