AIBU to think that ALL MN baby name threads have just two answers?

For a very few baby name threads ("Can I call my baby Chlamydia/Robovac/Hitler?") the answer is ARE YOU FUCKING MAD IN THE HEAD?
For the rest, the answer is just "[shrug] If you like it, go for it. What does it matter what we think?"
I do understand that it is an anxious decision, but I always find it hard to know how MN can really help. Whatever name you choose (aside from the flat-out crazy ones), some people will hate it and others will love it.

Is that you, Balonz?

Tallisker · 15/02/2024 19:11

I quite like the name Balonz.

EffortlesslyInelegant · 15/02/2024 19:13

Of all the things that need to quietly die and be spoken of never again, Balonz is the top of the list.

takeasadsongandmakeitbetter · 15/02/2024 19:14

Oh I love Balonz

Mytoddlerisferal · 15/02/2024 19:15

😂😂 there is definitely some truth to this. Really unless it’s Olivia or Alfie people on here usually have something to say. I think it’s just the fact you don’t want to tell anyone in real life so you throw yourselves to the wolves to get an opinion on it 🙈 I got the worst response ever on here (for the name I ended up choosing) and it’s one of the most popular names in my area now

GoodOldEmmaNess · 15/02/2024 19:17

I had no idea that Balonz was such a big thing on Mumsnet. Most of my children are called Balonz. Is that bad?

This is what I always feel like writing on the baby name threads. Three questions: 1) If you heard that name spoken would you know how to write it? 2) If you saw that name written down would you know how to say it? 3) If you saw that name would you know if it was a boy or girl? If the answer to any of these is no, don’t give them the name

Sandysandwich · 15/02/2024 19:33

Sometimes its useful if there is an association that a lot of people will make that has passed by the parents. Or they list a name combination that that they haven't realised is rude or something.
But most of the time it is a bit pointless, but its a willing audience and the OPs family are probably sick of them agonising over the same 5 names.

greglet · 15/02/2024 19:46

@GoodOldEmmaNess I hope that's only the boys. The feminine form, as any fule kno, is Balonzina.

GoodOldEmmaNess · 15/02/2024 20:58

I thought Balonz was short for Baloney, which is gender neutral. Hope I haven't created potential embarrassments for my daughters.

I love a good baby name thread.

I think they probably are useful when names are moving between cultures. To help understand how people may pronounce a name they are not familiar with. Or check on unfortunate meanings or associations.
