AIBU to suspect my lodger of being malicious

My training course was cancelled when I got there today so I came straight home, unexpectidly.

My lodger, who I have already given notice too had put her clothes in the tumble dryer and had also put kitchen paper in the vent. The bit where air and/or water comes out. It's a vent tumble dryer because it's in the garage with a stone floor so it doesn't matter about the water coming out of the vent.

As soon as she heard me come in she came and got her clothes out of the tumble dryer and I noticed that she'd taken the kitchen paper too. But I'd already seen it

Why would she do that?

Ask her??

Eyesopenwideawake · 15/02/2024 16:24

Because she didn't want to leave any evidence that she'd used the dryer. Tell her not to worry about it.

PutMyFootIn · 15/02/2024 16:25

She can use the dryer it's not a problem

It's not to cause a fire then?

I very much doubt your lodger is deliberately trying to set fire to your house. Be sensible!

WiddlinDiddlin · 15/02/2024 16:38

I would think she was worried about some water dribbling on the floor so used the kitchen paper to catch any!

fluffycatkins · 15/02/2024 16:40

I can't see her wanting to cause a fire which would burn up her own clothes at a minimum.
That would be significantly disturbed and most likely to damage herself as she would have been the only person in the house.

stormywhethers321 · 15/02/2024 16:47

If she's alone in an empty house, there are far easier ways to cause a fire than kitchen paper on the dryer vent. Surely she'd do something in the kitchen or knock over a candle or something. And she'd get herself put of the house if she knew a fire might break out soon.

I think she was just trying to catch drips.

BigDogEnergy · 15/02/2024 16:48

Are you OK OP?

PutMyFootIn · 15/02/2024 16:50

I'm Ok thanks, feel a bit better now.

She's been off with me since I asked her to leave but I've given her plenty of notice and I simply have to put the house on the market because I| can't afford to keep it anymore. It's upset me too but I just have to do it.

Just checking she wasn't being malicious. But you've put my mind at rest now.
