To ask if vaping helps you to lose weight

Nc as I'll probably get flamed for this.

I've never smoked or vaped. Dh does vape. Went to the vape shop with him today to pick up his fluid and jokingly said while I was there that I wouldn't mind trying one to see if it helps me lose weight ( on the basis of lots of people I know saying they put weight on when they quit smoking).

Long story short I came away with a disposable one to try.

I'm a real binge eater, the second I get hungry I end up eating even if it's just before mealtimes. I also drink more than I should. I vaped a few times today at times when I would usually eat something and it actually put me off the food. Not sure if it's the flavour or the act itself.

Has it helped anyone else lose weight? And yes I know it's not the healthy or proper way to try and lose weight but after years of failed diets and bad eating habits I'm willing to try anything at this point.

I wouldn't have thought inhaling sugar would help you lose weight.

thenightsky · 14/02/2024 17:14

I've never smoked or vaped either. A few years ago I thought nicotine patches might help me lose weight. I tried them for a fortnight and gave up. Useless at curbing hunger and made me feel jittery. I imagine vaping would be the same.

restingrichface · 14/02/2024 17:14

It helps no more than sucking on mints or chewing gum. It's the flavour hit combined with the oral fixation.

People gain weight when they quit for two reasons. One because nicotine is an appetite suppressant and they're quitting that and the other for the habitual hand to mouth action.

If you don't have an existing nicotine addiction, you're a moron for picking one up on the off chance you can shed 3lb.

Vegetus · 14/02/2024 17:14

What have I just read 😂

Frasers · 14/02/2024 17:15

I understand your logic, but no op. You will just become addicted to nicotine, otherwise it’s just a new toy.

Olivebrancholivia · 14/02/2024 17:16

Wtaf.
I despair.
This is the most outrageous thing I've ever read.

optionalnamechange · 14/02/2024 17:16

What the fuck kind of nonsense is this!

If you had a teenage daughter, what would you say if she suggested this?
Probably that it's batshit and a bad idea.

I wouldn't have thought inhaling sugar would help you lose weight.

op, ignore this, you are not inhaling sugar. Some do have a negligible amount but primarily it is artificial sweeteners and so little as to be classed as negligible . Don’t worry.

bumface26 · 14/02/2024 17:19

Ok instead of the snarky superior comments and faux outrage, why is it so stupid to think that something that contains nicotine (an appetite suppressant) may help me to lose weight?

I'm not a smoker or a vaper, never have been. So I'm asking this as a genuine question not to be ridiculed.

You’d damage your lungs and risk lung cancer to lose abit of weight?

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 14/02/2024 17:22

At the moment, you have a problem with binge eating.

Soon, you will have a problem with binge eating and vaping.

There isn't an easy way to stop bing eating. If there was no one would struggle with it.

You need to overhaul your diet and eating habits, rather than compounding your issue.

If you are at the stage of contemplating something this ridiculous you really need to talk to a GP or nutritionist.

They will help you address the binge eating in a less damaging way.

optionalnamechange · 14/02/2024 17:22

Ok OP, then I'll tell you straight that it;s just a genuinely bad idea to take up vaping if you've never smoked or vaped, for any reason. Least of all this.

Losing weight is a lifestyle change that takes hard work. I say this as someone who's been there.

PeggySooo · 14/02/2024 17:23

Nicotine can help reduce appetite, so possibly yes.
However, I personally think it'll come out in time and research that vapes are worse than cigarettes. Mostly because of their ease of use etc meaning you probably consume more of it than you ever would cigs.
Why would you want to inhale all kinds of chemical shit directly into your lungs when you could try other things?
If you are this desperate, I'd consider seeing the gp and asking them what they can do to help you.

Dymaxion · 14/02/2024 19:17

No is the short answer. I am a fat vaper and was a fat smoker, essentially I am just a person addicted to nicotine who also eats far too much. You will just end up with two problems instead of one.

BobbyBiscuits · 14/02/2024 19:25

It probably does as it's a different oral fixation, with the flavour of sweet things (if you are fond of them). I don't like vaping personally but can't talk as I smoke, lol. I find the 'smoke' from vapes so sickly.
If it helps, do it. But make sure you use one with no nicotine or dodgy ingredients (easier said than done, but firms like Totally Wicked etc sell the most legit ones you can get I guess).
Drinking loads of water is a good way to stop hunger for snacks, and keep something healthy in your bag like fruit. Walk more, then you probably won't need a vape so much to lose a few pounds. (if you really need to of course)

FatPrincess · 14/02/2024 19:39

Nicotine is an appetite suppressant and I find that vaping sweet flavours can sometimes give me that sweet fix after a meal when I'm full but still want something sweet.

But starting just to loose weight is bonkers. Quitting will feel worse than dieting and you'll probs put weight back on.

Emily1583 · 14/02/2024 19:43

No. Proper exercise - running is the best. Healthy eating too - no cheese, no bread, no potatoes. You're not going to lose weight without putting in work to get it.

DriedFlowersLiveForever · 14/02/2024 19:54

I was a fat smoker and now I'm a fat vaper.
Nicotine never particularly curbed my appetite unfortunately.
I would imagine you have just got yourself an expensive new habit.
